A schedule of conveyances of encroachments within HM's FoD (General)
A friend has kindly sent me a link to a page from a google book titled as above.
The page contains a a list of sixty five names all charged with encroachment listing the the walk, area of encroachment date and purchase/fine.
My 4x GGrandfather Peter Jenkins is included in the list.
1. Schedule 143
2. Walk - Parkend
3. Quanity of land - 4 poles
4. Name - Peter Jenkins
5. Date of conveyance - 4/08/1842
6. Purchase/fine £0 s5 d0
Peter quarried some land adjacent to Fetter Hill (Birch hill quarry)
Can anyone
1. Confirm that Birch Hill is within Parkend Walk?
2. Define 4 poles?
Kind Regards
Tony Jenkins

Rod, pole and perch are rather complicated. First, they are different names for the same unit of length, which is five and a half yards (see length page). To shorten the explanations, I use one unit rather than all three. Next, they could also be used as a unit of area. So a 10 perch allotment would be 5.5 yards wide by 55 yards long, or 10 square perch. To make my explanations clear, I say '(square) rod' to mean rod as a unit of area.
'tis as clear as mud now!

Thanks for quick response
5 poles = 128 sq yards (approx)
Having paid the fine did he have any legal right to the land or was it still owned by the Forestry.
As a Free Quarryman I though they pain the gaveller for the quarry rights and not the forestry

Gloucester County Records has documents and maps re Encroachments 1834. There was a history behind this. Extra Parochial areas were subject to illegal building of houses. I believe much of Blakeney was raised to the ground during the Commonwealth (Oliver Cromwell).
In 1834, a Govt. survey was conducted in FoD with a view to legalising the illegal properties existing. Parkend Walk is to be found in Q/RGf 1/5 in the records. This is basically Ellwood and my interest was because my family lived there at the time. I could'nt find the name however. Maps and listings, very useful for FH research. Blakeney Walk Q/RGf 1/6 includes Moseley Green, Cockshoot Inclosure and I think Soudley where the Dean Heritage Site is now and where my family lived between the 1840's and 1860's.
