I have found a burial for an Edward Badger 11 April 1853 at Newlands PC, aged 70 years old and residing at Berry Hill. I have searched the FoD records and found no other Edward Badger who fits in with this burial.
I have a great gggGrandfather, Edward Badger born in Staffordshire in 1783 (70 years old in 1853). He was living in Merthyr 1816 to 1849, but then dissapears entirely.
The last we know of Edward is when he was handed 6 months hard labour at Swansea prison in 1849, after which he just dissapears.
If this is my Edward I don't understand why he finished up in the Forest of Dean (although it is a lovely place to end up). As well as searching the FoD records for other Edwards I have also searched for possible family who he could have moved in with but without any result.
Does anyone on the site have a claim on this Edward Badger. I have searched for this death for quite a while. I suppose I may in the end have to get the death certificate to see if there is an informant.

Oh! Oh! looks even better that this might be our Edward, because our Edward was also a Nailor. Also being a lodger he might not have had family locally. Will go look at the census when the library open.
Thanks ever so for the reply slowhands very very helpful. Would you know if a Nailor was a common profession within the FoD area?

William BADGER Nailor Newland in 1841
by Rayden , Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 08:53 (5448 days ago) @ slowhands
Thanks for all the excellent research slowhands.
Looks even more like our Edward. There was a William (with a wife Rosonna) at Merthyr the same time as Edward and we believe that they were brothers. William & Rosonna had a daughter Sarah born 1830 but I don't have knowledge of the other children (were they all identified as children?)
Also some of the Hale children were born in Merthyr, so there might also be a connection there. I am trying to keep myself in check to stop making things fit where they don't
Thanks yet gain for the messages
Best Regards
Ray

Hi Slowhands
Just to keep you abreast of where I am. The marriage of John Webb & Isabella Hale was 9 April 1841 at Hewelsfield (from the FoD registers) and Isabella's fathers name given as William Badges, occupation Nailor. Looks like Edward was lodging with his niece.
Even with this evidence I am still a bit reluctant to fully accept that Edward is ours - although it looks more likely than unlikely.
The one issue is with Isabella being born in Canterbury, although William and Rosena could well have gone to to Kent before Merthyr. I had ancestors in my own line born in unlikley places.

Keeping an open mind and not rushing to conclusions is part of this game - I'll not teach you to suck eggs :-)
However you do get a feeling when things start to line up. I'll go back to the census image and double check the Canterbury, there is a Hangerbury / Anchorberry nr Lydbrook - and Cwmtillery nr Bedwelty Mon. you can almost hear the confusion ....

Hi Slowhands
Are you saying there was a marriage for a John Aile to Isabella Badger at Bedwellty in 1828? Where did this come from?
The 1828 marriage is a possiblity with a possible birth date for Isabella of 1811.
I have a possible Marriage for a William Badger to a Rose in 1810 in Clent Worcestershire and then baptisms in Merthyr in 1816 (maria to William & Rosanna), 1819 (Mary to William & Roson) and 1831 (Sarah to William & Rosonna.
Incidently whilst Bedwellty covered quite a big area in 1830/1840 I only live about 3 miles from St Sannons, Bedwellty church.

Got it. Well done slowhands, I always forget to search the pilot site. I need to identify the parish register? the Monmouthshire site only has marriage transcriptions up to 1812.
Your input has been so invaluable, thanks yet again

Hi Slowhands
Just Back from the Gwent Records Office.
Looked up the marriage of Isabella Badger to John Aile 10 July 1828 at Bedwellty. Not a lot of additional useful information, however it does show that John Aile was a Nailor. Both were recorded as 'Of This Parish' and were married by Banns (the Banns are not available). Both of them signed the register with a mark (X), and the two witness's were Joseph Morgan (X) and (looks like) Esther Snelling.
Regards
Ray
