At last I have cleared the east part of the graveyard at St Margarets Church Welsh Bicknos so more graves are visible, slowly photgraphing and indexing them and photos on www.oldnall.co.uk

I have enjoyed looking at this, not least because some of my ancestors are in the records. Do you know anything else about the school at Courtfield? Who was likely to have attended it and who ran it?

The only thing I know about the school comes from Mary Dances website - she says"It would struggle to hold more than 20 pupils. The school closed in the 1920s following the retirement in her 70s through ill health, of long serving teacher Miss Gunter who lived on Coppet Hill. "
However I guess there were a fair number of Estate workers on the Cortfield estate with children...

Cheers

Hello, I have only just found your message. My maternal great grandmother was Maria Gunter, the sister of Mary Agnes Gunter b.1848 Goodrich. Mary Agnes was the teacher at the school. She was a spinster. She died on 3rd April 1911 at Goodrich and was buried there on the 7th April 1911. Her profession is teacher on the census entries. Their parents were William Gunter 1825-1894, a mason and Maria Agnes nee Merry 1825-1900. They are buried in the Catholic area of Goodrich Parish Church graveyard.

Nick Oldnall requested permission from us to list on his Web site the names and year of the Welsh Bicknor burial Parish records which we have transcribed. This I agreed to and you will find the list of the burials together with a note next to the burials he has located a gravestone of.
