James family of Yorkley (General)

by Katharine Prince @, Queensland, Wednesday, April 12, 2006, 18:40 (6793 days ago)

I am trying to find details on a Florence James born 1879 to Sarah and James James who was a haulier and lived in Yorkley
I know she emigrated to Canada and I know that her daughter returned to the village during the 2nd World War to see were her Mother had grown up.The daughter was in the Canadian Services.
What is foxing me is trying to find who Florence married prior to emigrating.
I think it is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack as once I find out her married name I would be able to search the immigration records.

Hi Katharine
Florence James was my Great Aunt.My Great Grandfather was James James,my Grandfather was William James(twin Brother to Samuel)and brother of Florence.
William married Dora Charles. They had 5 children one of whom was Percival who was my father.
I have only just started looking at the family tree and you appear to have more information than me.I am still searching and will contact you if I find more information.

James JAMES family of Yorkley

Many thanks for all your help.
Well my Mother Florence James, named after the elisive aunt was born in 1915 and she can remember her Aunty Florence.
Mum didnt recall any children but can remember letters written home talking of wolves etc.
I would think Florence emigrated about 1920.
I just wish my Mother were here to ask.
I had a look at that possible marriage, but thought that Florence would have got married in Yorkley which wouldnt be Westbury on Severn.I guess the only way to be sure is purchase the certificate and see if James James was the father of the bride.

Hello Katharine,
I said I would send information as I found it.I think I have found a very likely marriage for Florence James on Genes re-united. From this it looks as though Florence may have married a Frederick Long in London. This would explain why we could not find her on any Gloucestershire records after 1891.The marriage was in June 1900 in Hampstead to Frederick Long who was born in Chelsea in 1879.I have it on pretty good authority that they went to Canada but I do not know the year. I think this would be a good lead to persue. The person who posted the information is,I think, a descendant of the Longs. It could be that Florence went away in service which a great many young women from the area did in those days.
I hope this is of help and that you can find now details of her emigration.
Brian James.

Hello Katharine,
I am glad you found the information on Florence and Frederick Long useful.I find it all very interesting as my father never mentioned that he had an aunt in Canada.I presume that he never knew because my mother, who was a Wildin, was in regular contact with her uncles over there in Saskatchewan and had he known he would surely have mentioned it.
What was your Grandfather's first name? I would love to have a photograph of him if that can be arranged.
Could you also tell me how to find the lists of passengers to Canada and the dates they went.I have tried many sites but cannot seem to find that information.I am obviously not doing it correctly.
It is so good to find new relatives.I shall certainly keep in touch.
Brian.
