Deakins - Parkend (General)
Does anyone have any information on the Deakins of Parkend House, my grandfather is doing research for an article in the New Regard and already has lots of information but any information would be helpful. Thanks.
Deakins - Parkend
In 1877 (?) Thomas Deakin arrived in to live at Parkend House on his appointment as colliery manager of the Parkend Mines. Deakin was born in Pontypool in 1850 and had worked in mining since he was thirteen. In 1885 The Parkend & New Fancy Collieries Co.Ltd purchased the mines. The company was part owned by Deakin who was chairman and managing director. There followed a period of prosperity and Deakin was appointed a JP and became the unofficial squire in the village People were expected to doff there caps or curtsey when they pass in the village. He died in 1935 and is buried in Parkend churchyard

Deakins - Parkend
Thanks for the information - my grandfather is somewhat confused with the 1881 census - he was led to believe that after Thomas Hedges Deakin's marriage to Gertrude in 1880 they immediately moved to Parkend House. However he has information saying the head of household in 1881 in Parkend house was Sidney John Thomas who had lived there from 1878 from one source and that the head of household was Earnest A Gould from another.
Any help please!?
