opinion on an occupation please (General)
Hi
I have a marriage certificate from 1872, on which the bride Elizabeth Whittaker states that her father is George, a Gas Fitter, deceased.
I think I have found Elizabeth in 1861 living with her family in Abergavenney
RG9 3993 83 17
Name Age
Eliza Whitaker 12
Elizabeth Whitaker 44 - widow
Elizabeth Whitaker 10
James Whitaker 6
Joseph Whitaker 8
I have received a death cert for George Whitaker 15/3/1861,Abergavenny that gives his occupation as General Labourer-
I was hoping the informat would confirm that I had the right George, but it was the Coroner, not a family member. I will have to try and find a newspaper report I think.
So anyway, what I am going the long way about asking you is.....
Do you think a Gas Fitter could also be classed as a General Labourer?
Any opinons please.
Thanks

Firstly I 'm sure you have the correct family in 1861
8th April 1861 Census in Abergavenny dist 4
Stroudwater and Blakeney transcribed as Shoud Water and Blackley
Elizabeth Whitaker abt 1817 Shoud Water, Gloucestershire, England Head Abergavenny Monmouthshire
Eliza Whitaker abt 1849 Shoud Water, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Abergavenny Monmouthshire
Elizabeth Whitaker abt 1851 Blackley; Dean, Devon, England Daughter Abergavenny Monmouthshire
James Whitaker abt 1855 Bream, Gloucestershire, England Son Abergavenny Monmouthshire
Joseph Whitaker abt 1853 Blackley; Dean, Devon, England Son Abergavenny Monmouthshire
Secondly, yes a general labourer would encompass gas fitter, althought fitter would given the impression of a tradesman.
Abergavenny had a Gas works from 1823, and in 1860 a Reservoir construction project commenced.
So in conclusion its starting to "gel"

Thank you for that reply Slowhands-
Yes I did originally have the impression from the marriage cert that he was a tradesman, but I suppose he could have been doing the manual work.
Thank you, I didn't know about the Gas works-
I'll try and get a report on the inquest anyway, it may mention family and that would confirm things further. I'm curious anyway to find out whose stairs he fell down!
Thanks again
