Seeking George Bennett (Urgent)

by Waterdragon @, New Zealand, Thursday, April 21, 2022, 11:10 (939 days ago)

George Bennett married Ellen Stidder in Abenhall on 10 Nov 1860. He is said to be a miner, of age and the marriage was witnessed by her father Edward. There were 3 children born before Ellen died in 1869. He is reputed to have gone with the youngest child Lydia Ann (ka Lydia Ellen) to New Zealand. Lydia married Frederick Lurch there in 1887. She is my g grandmother.
I am really keen to find out more about George Bennett. Other than that one marriage record I can find nothing that would seem to be of use. A DOB would be good. The parish records do not seem to help and 1841,51 and 61 censuses don't really hit the spot. If anyone has information or suggestions to track my elusive gg grandfather, I would be grateful. I am quite prepared to believe my searching has missed something significant.

Where does George say he was born on the 1861 census.

There does seem a big gap between the children 1861/1867/1869

Sometimes using the Advance Search can help trace family members e.g.

The other witness was Hannah WOOD....

Hannah STIDDER (father Edward STIDDER married George WOOD - 11 April 1851 in Abbenhall - witnesses; George MALSON, and Ellen? STIDDER

? Not sure if this is the same person who has asked about George Bennett.

There is a link on Rootschat.com - back in 2010 - and give amongst other the 1871 Census, where George EDWARDS is nephew with a Richard RICHARDS and his family in Shapridge, East Dean

and Sarah is niece with a WOOD family next door to the ROBERTS.

It always helps to know the research so far, to avoid duplication.

Thanks for the response. I'll reply here to both of your responses
first George in the 1861 census-good thought. I shall search again and this time widen my search- I didn't find them (George and Ellen) in Gloucestershire, though their son George Edward was baptised in Abenhall that year.
The long gap between 1861 and 1867 is indeed an interesting question. One for future research after I have got a bead on the elusive George...
As for the other 2 kids in the 1871 census, they are indeed Lydia BENNETT's siblings. Ellen was one of 7 Stidder sisters, and George Edward is with his aunt Mary Ann Richards, wife of Richard Richards, while Sarah Stidder is with Hannah Woods another sister. Hannah was the witness on thw wedding entry for George and Ellen's wedding. I have searched out much more information on the Stidder family than for George's family, but the suggestion gives me one more avenue to try, so thank you.
