Walford-info on the Young family (Edith and Frederick Harry) (Urgent)
by Jessica Dutton, Wednesday, October 05, 2022, 14:33 (812 days ago)
Hello from Australia! I am seeking information on my great grandfather Frederick Harry Young 1897-1953 and his mother Edith Young born June or July 1876. My family lived in Walford for many generations and both were born there. I’ve found their baptism records on this forum and some info on Ancestry.com but it is limited so I am hoping someone with local knowledge might know of my family.
Frederick doesn’t have a father listed in his birth or baptism records, and Edith doesn’t appear to have married or had any more children. I believe she went into service in Cheltenham. Unfortunately I can’t find her death certificate but I found a record for an Edith Young that might be her working as a servant at The Limes in Cheltenham when she was in her early 60’s. I’m hoping to find any information on Edith and her family. There is plenty of info on her siblings, but she is a bit of mystery. Many thanks, Jess

There appear to be two Edith YOUNG's listed as mother's around the same time in Walford: on being Edith LINK who married Richard Henry YOUNG 25 September 1897, so it is difficult to know, if the Witness to this wedding at Walford, 4 May 1900, is the Edith you are researching.
Using the Advance Search it is possible to search for witnesses, but the Bride is also a Servant at Walford.
4 May 1900
Joseph WARDELL aged 30, Bachelor, occupation: Tailor, Grooms residence: Mansfield
father: William WARDELL Florist
Elizabeth GREEN, aged 28, Spinster, occupation: Servant, Brides residence: Walford
father: Richard GREEN, labourer
by Banns
Witness 1: Arthur John GREEN
Witness 2: Edith Young
Parish Chapel: Walford
----
As Edith called her Son, Frederick Harry, if this isn't a family name on her side, it could possibly be the Father of Frederick's Christian name.
? Assume you have Frederick on the 1901 census living with Edith's family.

? On the baptism of Gilbert YOUNG's children, he is listed as a labourer.
The census' would be useful, as I don't subscribed to Ancestry any more, but do have access to British Newspapers on line.
(Not sure if you do?)
I think he seems to be correct man as this article appears - Thursday 24 November 1910- as he does have a Son, called Arthur (on the records, christened in 1878)
AN OLD CONTRACTOR'S DEATH
Mr Lewis said he regretted to have to report the death of Gilbert YOUNG, one of the oldest contractors and road foreman under that Council and its predecessors.
He had pleasure in testifying to the many good qualities and the conscientious manner in which he late Mr Young always endeavoured to discharge his obligations and duties.
He had, however, great satisfication in recommending the deceased's son MR ARTHUR YOUNG, who asked that the contract might be transferred to him. He might add that the work had been satisfactorily carried out by the sons for the past two years.
The Chairman said he thought the Council would be pleased to hear that the late contractor had given such great satisfaction, and that he had been such an efficient and goodworkman.
He was sure the Council would also regret losing him by death (hear, hear).
It was decided to transfer the contract to the son, as suggested by the Surveyor.

Assume Gilbert YOUNG left a Will

Fairview house mentioned in a previous post is next to Chapel House Howle Hill.
Howle Hill is a scattered community of 100 or so houses. It is In Walford parish but is a good 10 minute walk from Walford Village. Howle Hill once had a church and a Chapel, both now private houses.
PS I was born in Ruardean and have lived on Howle Hill for the last 40 years.
