Florence Eveline Mason (General)
Hi All
Havent posted for a long tims just trying to tie up some loose ends up regarding my Forest ancestors if i can !
My Grt Gran was Florence Evelin Mason daughter of Noah she married Edward John Jones in Gwent recently speaking to my Dad whos in his 80s he was told that either Florence or her Mother were born out of wedlock and took Mason surname? Is only way to prove this via birth certs ot wedding certs?
Another thing he was told that either on jis Masons or Tippins one of our line married a 1st cousin who died and then remarried her sister ? He beleaves they were both stated as deaf and dum on census aa were a few of the offspring ? He says either the Tippins or Masons this side happened to were tent dwellers originally on ruar dean hill or crump meadow and worked in the nearby mine?
Would love to know if any of this true or hearsay he heard growing up when the Tippins visited his Nanny Tippins in South Wales as a kid
Any info links or details on any of the above would be really appreciated
Many thanks in advance
Duncan

MASON TIPPINS and deaf dumb clue prior thread
Very interesting !! Unfortunately I have not noted the source, but I have Ellen Mason with unmarried partner George Mason 1871, son of Benjamin Mason & Melinda Davies as parents of Florence Evelyn Mason. I was not aware of the marriage to George Tippins. On the 1881 Census George Mason was shown as Deaf & Dumb, as was his 3 sisters. This goes along with Phil's entry :
Noahs Daughter Ellen was my Dads grt Grandmother,it is beleaved Ellen married one of Noahs brothers(Benjamin) sons who was deaf and dumb as were several of their offspring :

Could you possibly post the 1901 & 1911 Census entries you speak of.
George Tippins, George Mason & Ellen Mason above were each 7th cousins twice removed of mine.

Melinda DAVIS 1844 Ruardean Woodside
Thanks again ill make note to mention Fletchers to me Dad ????im goin down load map of Forest today so i can look up said areas woodside , ruardean hill etc as never been to Forest (Yet definately this Year!) so maybe link thru Davis to Davis Gypsies from fod is lookin likely hopefully me Dads memory might get a jog????side note inyeresting to see Romany families working in mines even tho not a Traditional Gypsy trade so many wouldnt ever see a connection ive seen on census Boswells and Hearnes living in camps in notth east 1800s but listed as coal miners which proves like i thought many took regular graft-but still lived the traveller life for a better word
Now at least i can trace Davis family frm Melindas side can anyone recomend any sites that may contain pics of any Masons Davis Fletcher familes from forst or of areas in forest they of stayed by any chance?

To further clarify Slowhands' findings above;
1. Odd how Edward and Florence Jones seem to have evaded the 1911 census, or indeed later records such as death records, at least as far as I can find. Hopefully Duncan you already have this information.
2. Duncan, you mentioned your Dad "was told that either Florence or her Mother were born out of wedlock and took Mason surname?"
Slowhands gave you the above BMD records from the FreeBMD website. At first glance it seems the family weren't churchgoers, otherwise Slowhands would have given you parish records to give more information about the events, especially useful as they often contained sidenotes if a child was baptised out of wedlock. However, we can still look-up the above records on the GlosBMD website which gives a little more info, namely;
Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
MASON Florence Eveline 1891 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 62 93
The absence of the mother's former name in this record usually suggests that Florence was illegitimate.
3. Regarding the Marriage of Noah and Charlotte in 1860, the GlosBMD record helpfully confirms this wasn't a church wedding;

---------------
Despite thinking Noah and Charlotte were not churchgoers, I now see this FoDFH website contains detailed Baptism Records for several of their children, and a couple of marriages, as follows. More details can be found by looking at each individual record, but suffice to say in every one Noah is given as a coal miner, residing Ruardean Hill, and the church is "Drybrook", aka the beautiful Holy Trinity on Harrow Hill, known locally as the Forest Church. http://drybrook.forestchurch.org.uk/
Those baptisms, and a few other records, are:

I think the absence of Florence from this list is further proof she was born out of wedlock.
Florence Eveline MASON 1891, and father Noah in 1911.
UPDATE - Pleased to see Slowhands has added to his original post while I was typing the above post. I also saw the possibility Florence and Edward Jones were in Bedwelty district, which includes Abertillery - I was helped by my finding this 1911 census record for her widowed father Noah living with her brother Sydney. I'm sure Slowhands will soon find them in the 1901 census as well.

Given her young age to be a "visitor", I suspect Ethel BALDWIN may be a relative ?
Or maybe they're just minding a neighbour's child at the moment the census official called by.

Florence Eveline MASON 1891, and father Noah etc
Hi Slowhands and Jefff
Thanks for taking time out to do look ups and sharing????great stuff ive never looked back at my Jones line so thats great????definately something else to look into
Back to Florence so she was illigitimate after all by looks of it and took her Mothers name of Mason am i right ? Im still trying to work out her or her husbands link back to Benjamin Mason and Melenda Davis ? Is that her Nan or possibly her Mum? Bear with me im looking for me readers!
Florence Eveline MASON 1891,Melinda (updated mother in law)
Hi
Melinda Davis is the mother of the deaf/dumb children, and Ellen 1869, I suspect she is a great Aunt to Florence MASON.....need to see what was recorder on her birth and marriage certs to attempt to untangle this one. And then we may have two sources in agreement if you you are lucky !
Update
NOah MASON 1838 is her Grandfather
she gives her father as a George MASON witnesses Jotham and Brenda MASON which make Melinda her "mother in Law" had they married , however my George candidate dies before he could father Florence
so is the George MASON father an older man - there are a couple of candidates nearby or was the dead George MASON a convenient scapegoat to cover up the pregnancy ?

George TIPPINS and Ellen MASON marriage
Quick update!
Just like to say i showed my Dad all the stuff and records that was kindly found out about his Mason line hes so thankful and would like to say thankyou on his behalf i got the job of trying to put it in order for him
As far as the Davis Family who has Sarah Davis ( Fletcher Eli Fletcher being her husband) has her Davis line been traced i notice an article on her death as Queen of Forest And wondering if she in any way links to Melinda Davis Benjamin Mason?
Nearly forgot to say me Dad was told Ellens Father wasnt Noah but Benjamins but it was hussed up or not even worried about!
Should i post new topic on Sarahs Line regarding any link to Melinda?
Thanks again great work by all

So the Melinda Davis family is who i need to trace ? The info on Benjamin and melinda poss tent dwellers maybe link to Sarah or family as faras i can see Sarahs brother Charles was born westdean and her Father was from Lyndham forest of dean ?many of the families of travellers seem to ave never left the forest some uo to 100 years on census? So the links provided to Fletchers Davis on thread are nothingto do with the post the. Seems lot of effort if theres no link confused to say least it does seem me Dad heard right as a kid in South Wales Florence was indeed illigimate daughter of George brought up by Noah George links to Melinda and Benjamin Ellen is indeed illigimate as for Miranda it seems im tracing wrong Davis due to fletcher davis posts that were provided for no reason i need to reread thru topic and see parents for Mirand aand see any or if any tie on from an ancestor of families from FOD whos never been to the forest or tried tracing family they didnt make it easy down there im more confused then Scooby Doo
connections
so I guess it would be useful to attempt to draw out a chart (s) to show the various connections esp where the FLETCHER and DAVIS, and MASON lines mingle etc.
from experience helping trace gypsy roots has been frustrated by enumerators who either failed or simply missed some families living in tents in the Forest - this seems especially true in the early censuses.
often searching by trade such as Tin plate worker, basket maker, chair maker, tinker etc can uncover related groups of travelling folk. There are groups who appear to settle in the area - based on where they are on Census day and then places of birth for the off spring. and then others who roam far and wide, Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Herefordshire etc.
all we try to do here is assist where we can with evidence, and offer experience and possible directions to explore, perhaps " based on what we find, it feels like". Sometimes the tree/branches are clear, and then they can be confusing !
we are human, we make mistakes, but on the whole the results speak for themselves

George TIPPINS and Ellen MASON marriage
Never seen any connection to Masons and Sarah Davis never had a brother or sister as far as I'm aware.
Sarah's parentage is confusing as census states she was daughter of Charles Davis (b. Lydney) and after her death her eldest daughter, Emily, reports in a newspaper article that Letitia Davis and John Preddy.
Letitia and Charles were the children of Austin Davis and Sarah Greenwood of Great Wolford Warwickshire and were a widespread Romany family as are the Fletchers. Sarah's death was widely reported in newspapers and she was recognised in the forest as a well respected healer using plants from the forest.
I have extensive research on both Davis and Fletcher. There are a few gaps so don't claim to know everything but not come across a lot of the names in this thread or found any links in my tree.
George TIPPINS and Ellen MASON marriage
No drama i appreciate everyone look ups and time ill keep popping in to see if anyone mentions my Davis Mason Tippins Baldwin Saunders families from the forest! All interesting stuff especially me Masons carry ons! Thanks again
George TIPPINS and Ellen MASON marriage
My great grandfather Henry Simmonds was married to Alice Mason. Sadly she passed away when she was quite young in 1910.
We went to visit the family graves in Drybrook. I believe I saw a grave there for “Malinda Mason” just opposite my great grandfathers.
Alice and Henry had a daughter and named her Ada Malinda.
