Adoption (General)

by Katep, Saturday, June 29, 2024, 03:54 (179 days ago)

If Joseph Giles Goulding adopted his wife's illegitimate child, her name was Emily Ellen Daniel
between 1915, their marriage and 1920, where would you start looking
Of course, the war had just started so I don't know if adoptions even happened during the war.
There was a child, a boy but i can find no trace

In England and Wales the Adoption of children legislation came in 1926

Prior to this "adoption" was under the Poor Law , the World War saw an increase in demand and the various societies involved in helping/rescuing orphaned children.

Im sure that in my research here for others in these circumstances where a mother and child(ren) has remarried "we see" in census data sometimes the children with their original surnames and most often ( I feel) with the sew family surname.

So location them in 1921 would be a first step. Unless the child went to love with an Aunt or stranger.....

from Joseph and Emily's marriage cert are her parents recorded - so that her line can be explored for the missing child ?

Thank you as always
We think we have perhaps found him, but nothing is certain'
What do you think became of Vickers to let poor Emily die so young in a poor house.
I can find no trace of him

It would be worth ordering the death cert for Emily in 1930, that may give additional clues. Looking at a ( not too clear) scan of his naval service, from 1924 thru 1928 he is assigned to various ships and land bases ( VIVID II) – appears that he is based in Devonport.
