I think it is the Swan Hotel in Cinderford. The arched windows give it away.

Looks like there was a lot of snow in the Forest in the winter of 1947!
Is there anybody here that can remember?

My Grandmother died on 23rd March 1947. Apparently there was very heavy snowfall at the time.

yes Jan and Feb saw a long cold spell, with frequent snow that accumulated. Further powdery snow in early March created deep drifts.
Cinderford - "always an overcoat colder than the rest of Gloucestershire" saw significant snow and drifting " up over thic 'edges !" several communities were cut off for days , maybe weeks.
And then the thaw set in from mid March, which led to widespread flooding in the Wye Valley (Lower Lydbrook / Kerne Bridge) and Severn vale.
Swan Hotel - Location?

Hello,
The picture is of The Swan Hotel, Cinderford. I remember that winter very well, although I was only 8 years old. Everything was at a standstill because of the big freeze.
The buildings opposite include a garage. These were all pulled down in the late 1950's and in their place is the Spar, there was also a confectionery shop, a fruit and veg. shop, butchers and a TV rentals. Some of these may have changed ownership over the years.

Margaret Baldwin

Its the Swan, top of High Street where it become Belle Vue Road.
I guess the 'photo was taken from the end of Woodside Street.
< I'll send a modern photo in to Admin later today, to add for comparison>

This is a great photo for comparison purposes.
As a Grindle descendant, I'm very interested in the "Grindles" shop next door.
Does anyone know anything of the history of this establishment and/or which Grindle family owned/operated it?
Thanks very much!

Thanks Slowhands.
One of my Grindle cousins here in the USA provided me with information you had supplied a couple of years ago.
Very interesting story.
