Any connections with VAUGHANS of Bristol (General)

My great great grandfather Philip Vaughan was born in the parish of St philip and St jacob in Bristol and shows up on the 1841 census as 1 year old living with his mother Sarah Vaughan and Ann Vaughan in Little Ann St. Ann is age 50 to 54 and was born in Gloucestershire, Sarah is given in the 1851 census as being a widow with son Philip and daughter Sarah Ann Vaughan age 5 and born in Bristol about 1819.

Philip's wedding certificate gives his father's name as George (occupation - painter/plasterer), but I can find no record of him in the census, and I couldn't find baptismal records for Philip Vaughan in Holy Trinty Church records when I looked for his date of birth 24.8.1839 (as given on marriage certificate) By deduction George must have been born before 1824 and died between 1845 and 1851.

In the 1841 census for Little Ann St. there is a Betsy Vaughan (mother-in-law? to Samual Britton, an agricultural labourer)born about 1790 and a Thomas Vaughan(occupation – smith?) born about 1830, possibly in Whitecroft.
In the 1851 census for the parish of St philip there is also the family of William Vaughan who came fron Tiddenham. In my family there is a rumor that either George or Philip vaughan was an illegitimate child of the Vaughans from Courtfield or Ruardean. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows of any connection between the Vaughans living in St Philips, Bristol in the early 19th century and Vaughans originating in the FoD

I've ordered a copy of the Philip Vaughan's birth certificate but whilst I'm waiting for it to arrive here in France I've had the following thought on which you might like to comment.
My grandmother paid a professional, in the late 60's I believe, to chase up the family records. He got as far as Philip son of George and said he could go no further because Philip's baptismal records were lost in WWII when the church in which they were kept was bombed! My grandmother left it at that and in the late 70's when I took up the quest I went to the records office in Bristol and looked up the baptismal records for Holy Trinity (which did exist!) for the period covering a year before his birth to more than 2 years after his birth and could find nothing. I was working on the principal that he would be C of E and therefore baptized in his local parish church shortly after his birth. It has just occurred to me that he may have been from catholic or non-conformist stock do you know the confession of the Vaughan families in Tiddenham and Whitecroft at this time?
With regard to George Vaughan, I've looked at the 1841 census for Tiddenham and son George is no longer living with his parents so it is possible that he was Sarah's husband, we shall have to wait and see what the birth certificate says,

yours
melanie

according to the birth certificate which arrived this morning Philip's father's name is William, his mother's maiden name was Mapstone, his father's occupation was labourer and the birth was registered by his mother.

Mapstone is in line with the Bristol / North Somerset area.

However

Philip's wedding certificate gives his father's name as George (occupation - painter/plasterer),

seems at odds with a father named as William ??

exactly! Though Philip was married in Southwark in 1863 and if his mother was not present he must have given the info on the certificate from memory, some 15 years after his father's death. Maybe he was called George by the family but christened William, or the other way round, maybe Sarah called him William but he was christened George. What I would dearly love to know is where William/George and Sarah were married, if they were CoE it should have been St Phillips church and unfortunately there birth records were destroyed by bombing in WWII, but I don't know about the marriage records. In short I am no nearer to finding where Philip's father was born and therefore from which set of Vaughan's he was descended.
as for the Mapstone connection, there is a James and Ann Mapstone living in Wade st( next to Little Ann st) on the 1841 census with a son Thomas who is doing a carpenters apprenticeship in Ubley in Sommerset on the 1851 census, which is a possible for Sarah's family if and when I can find their marriage details.

My 3 times Great Grandmother was Hannah Vaughan referred to above as living Bristol St James in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses. She was married to a Philip Vaughan but it seems she was herself a Vaughan. Her parents being Richard and Betty Vaughan (her will confirms this as it refers to pews at Ruardean Church, which she was bequeathed in Richard Vaughan's will, proved in 1829/30).

I have never been able to trace this Philip Vaughan, however. He died prior to 1837 but his children were born in Bristol St James between 1803 and 1810.

As Richard and Betty Vaughan are my 5g grandparents I would be interested to see Richard's will (proved in 1829/30).
Would you be able to supply a copy to be posted and shared on this site?

Although not directly related to the persons named in the original enquiry, about whom I have no knowledge, I do have in my family tree the Hannah Maria Vaughan 1778 whose baptism is shown in Slowhands Feb 2008 contribution.

This Hannah Maria Vaughan is a bit of a mystery to me. She is in my tree as I have connections with descendants of both her parents Richard Vaughan 1741 & Betty Gagg 1746.

I have Hannah Maria Vaughan 1778 as married to John Vaughan 1778, son of William Vaughan 1748 and Hannah Jemima Bennett 1757. Before moving away from John Vaughan's parents, my notes for them (from an unknown source - I am very bad at recording sources) :
Notes for WILLIAM VAUGHAN: Ruardean records 48/22 - 1809/10 Final Concord made at Westminster in 49th year of reign of George III , sale of property by William and Hannah Jemima Vaughan to John and Mary(Vaughan from courtfield) Jones. Copies 36 Pounds See: www.ancestordocs.co.uk/Gloucestershire.htm

I have not found a marriage for Hannah Maria Vaughan & John Vaughan, but I believe it is possible that she had previously been married to a Yemm as I did find this marriage :

John Vaughan 1778 & Hannah Maria Vaughan had a daughter Elizabeth Vaughan born 26 Dec 1806 and baptised Ruardean 5 Feb 1808. My notes for her are interesting :

Notes : Baptised after Elizabeth's marriage to John Vaughan when they presumably adopted her. See research notes regarding the parentage of her birth mother Frances Vaughan :

Research Notes : She is Frances ,the daughter of William and Frances Vaughan of Courtfield . He is the son of Richard (1708) who was banished to spain and never returned . William(1738) inherited from his uncle John Vaughan . Frances did marry a Major Thomas Davis in 1810 . Although i don't have her birthdate , her brother william was born in 1781.

I have this Hannah Maria Vaughan as buried 29 Nov 1851 St James, Bristol.

There are a number of connections between the Vaughan's and the Bennett's. Hannah Maria Vaughan 1778 had a brother Absalom 1772 who married a Mary Bennett, her brother John Vaughan 1777 married Elizabeth Bennett.

update on information for those who may be interested:
Phillip Vaughan(1839) had a grandmother called Ann. I have bought her death cert and the details are as follows:
Death: 1849 18 Mar
Age 58
residence Eugene st, St Philip And St Jacob'S, Bristol
died of asthema registered by M porter resident in near by Wade St (she is a next door neighbour to Ann Vaughan in Little Ann St on the 1841 census)
Ann is given as the widow of Phillip Vaughan occupation smith

They seem to have a son Thomas whose baptismal records are on IGI:
bapt 08 FEB 1824 St Philip And St Jacob'S, Bristol, Gloucester, England

He seems to be on the 1841 England Census
Age: 20, occupation smith, residence Little Ann St, St Philip And St Jacob'S, Bristol, Gloucester

I have also found a George Vaughan on the 1841 census in King's Alms lane Brislington, age 30, a lodger by the looks of things, occupation plasterer which fits the info on Philip's wedding cert. I have still yet to find a direct connection to FoD Vaughans as I have no idea where Philip senior was born or married. His wife Ann was according to the 1841 census born in Gloucestershire about 1791 and if I have found the right William/George Vaughan then according to the 1841 census he was born in Somerset not Gloucestershire which is likely where his mother's family came from and most likely where their wedding took place, although The census records give Sarah mapstone place of birth as Bristol about 1819

I have a large amount of info on the Vaughans of Tidenham, Woolaston and Hewelsfield,
dating from about 1780. I have not tried to go back any further as yet.
