John MILES born Newland c 1836 (reply)

I know this is an old post, but I have just identified the two girls on the census. They are the daughters of William and Phoebe's oldest daughter Elizabeth. There is a marriage record for Elizabeth Miles and Thomas Beck on FindMyPast 13 Sep 1835 Newington St Mary. Then we have the following records from FamilySearch:
Name: Mary Ann Beck
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 18 Oct 1835
Christening Place: ALL SOULS,ST MARYLEBONE,LONDON,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 24 Sep 1835
Father's Name: Thomas Beck
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C05391-1
System Origin: England-ODM
GS Film number: 580892, 580893

Name: Phoebe Beck
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 17 May 1838
Christening Place: RENFREW ROAD WORKHOUSE,LAMBETH,SURREY,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Thomas Beck
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C06979-1
System Origin: England-ODM
GS Film number: 254505

Mary Ann was born less than 2 weeks after the wedding and Phoebe was christened in a Workhouse. In the 1841 census, Elizabeth is with her aunt Elizabeth (Yerworth or Yarworth) in Gravesend Kent and is mentioned in her aunt's will in 1844. There is a transcrition on-line of the will. I have also found Phoebe Beck aged 12 in the 1851 census living with two aunts Mrs Sarah Harnden and Ann Maria Miles (The FindMyPast transcription is Sarah Hartsden and Phoebe Buk, but the image confimrms this is Phoebe). If these two girls are Elizabeth's, then I wonder if John Miles is also her son.

Thanks for your reply.

We have records that show that my husband's grandfather and his siblings were all born in Forest 0f Dean and that his g grandfather John lived and died in England. It could be that your John and our John were related in some way though. I think there must have been quite a few families with the surname Miles living in the Forest area.

Thanks again

John MILES born Newland c 1836 (reply)

Hi Don

Sorry for delay in replying. I have so far been unable to trace a birth registration or baptism for Eugenie Miles. She appears on the 1891 census, aged 6 years, with her Grandfather John and his sons and daughters. I have looked through the bmd registers from 1884 - 1886 without any luck. I assume she is the illegitimate daughter of Mary Elizabeth. If I do find out anything new I'll let you know.

Best wishes

John MILES born Newland c 1836 (reply)

Hi Don

I have Emily Evans Miles and Charles Keedwell on our tree, my husband's grandfather (James Edward) was the youngest child of John and Emma. You may already know that the eldest child of John and Emma, Mary Elizabeth, married Thomas Keedwell 30 July 1889.

I have looked on the census for the John Miles from Blakeney that you mention and have found one that seems to fit. He is living with parents John and Sarah on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census and then with his spouse Betsy from 1871 -1901. I think I might have to accept that our John is going to be one of those dead ends that we sometimes come up against.

Let me know if you would like any of the info I have on John and Emma's children.

Many thanks

I am right at this moment researching Emily Evans MILES daughter of John MILES and Emma MILES nee WHERRETT. Emily married my cousin Charles KEEDWELL at Clearwell, in 1891. Although I can't help with the question you ask, as it baffled me as to the date and place of birth of John MILES, as he gives Newland as his place of birth in census returns, but I've not been able to find an entry for him in the FOD database. In all probability the IGI entry for John MILES at Blakeney 1836, father John MILES and Sarah (BLANCH) is the same person.

Cheers

Thanks

I did wonder about the possibility of William and Phebe being John's Grandparents but being referred to as nephew on the 1841,1851 and 1861 made me abandon that idea, perhaps I should reconsider it.

I hadn't given any thought to the two little girls who appear on the census with John, I'll see if I can find out any more about them, like you say they could provide a lead.

Many thanks

Thanks ChrisW

It had crossed my mind that William and Phebe would have been more of an age to be Grandparents than Uncle/Aunt. Thanks for the info on William's burial, I have a copy of William's will but that hasn't helped solve my puzzle.

Thanks again

John MILES born Newland c 1836

I am trying to trace the parents and/or any other ancestors/relatives of my husband's G Grandfather John Miles. John appears as nephew to William and Phebe Miles on the census from 1841 to 1861 at Perrygrove. On the 1871 census he is farming at Perrygrove with his wife Emma (Wherrett) and children.

I have been unable to find a baptism that might be John, I am guessing that he may have been the illegitimate child of a relative of William and Phebe, just wondered if anyone had any other ideas or info on this family.

Many thanks.
