Transcripts (Parish Records)
by aussie , Tasmania, Australia, Saturday, June 04, 2016, 13:12 (3086 days ago)
Hi, I just searched the knowledgebase but couldn't find an answer.
With the Transcripts that are on this site in Parish Records are those details exactly the same or is their likely to be more on the original image (digital/microfiche/register book)?
My question relates to the Transcript Record ID: 374193.
The event happened at Ledbury, it would be great if the original or digitised version of the Baptism included his mother's surname, but I know that's a long shot. I can't find his parents marriage at Ledbury, so this is becoming another brick wall.
TIA.

Hi,
I'm not a member of the site's admin, but as far as I'm aware any information that appears on the original source material will have also been included on the transcript within the database, certainly something as useful as additional family names.
Unfortunately I'm unable to find the Baptism to which you refer from just the reference number 374193 (and I've tried using the Advanced search too), altho this may of course just be my ignorance as having never tried this search route before. If you could please copy & paste it onto a post, then perhaps we'll be able to help with your research.
Thanks, Jeff.

I have checked the original register and there is no additional information present. I note there is a marriage at Hereford All Saints on 28 October 1733 between John Probert and Sarah Boswood both of Ledbury, and that there are various children born at Ledbury up to 1853 with the Surname Probert, Probins, Probyns. Hope this helps.

Hi Graham, please could you clarify your source of this info ?. I can see this marriage record on Ancestry & FamilySearch, but that record doesn't mention the couple are from Ledbury. I'm hoping you have access to Herefordshire PRs, which is something I've often wanted myself, hence my asking the question.
Many thanks, again, Jeff.

Sorry to disappoint you Jeff but the marriage came from the CD I bought from the Hereford Family History Society, I too would like greater access to the Herefordshire PRs!!
If you use the Advanced Search and put the Surname in as PROB with parents John and Sarah you will find a few more children, remember most people were illiterate in those days and so the Vicar wrote down what he thought he heard!!

Thanks Graham, I was worried I was missing something obvious so "happy" to find otherwise. In fact it's not a disappointment at all, participating in this great forum is always an absolute pleasure and often a welcome distraction from real-world problems and even disappointments elsewhere.
Yes agree entirely re the spellings, that's a trick I've learnt from this forum, it also saves my worn-out typing finger !
Many thanks again, J, and good-luck Aussie on your research.

Jeff,
Thanks so much for your assistance and good wishes.
I discovered this website last night. Although not directly relating to the FoD there may be other folk like ours from Herefordshire who (or their descendants) were also living in the FoD. HER is searchable and I found lots of PROBERT folk on there. I just need to clone myself now to get them all sorted! I thought it might interest you too.

No problem A, we're all here to help if possible.
Yes, so many FoD enquiries also cross-over into Herefordshire, but sadly that fair county isn't as well blessed with online resources as Glos or Monmouthshire etc. (And very few parts of the British Isles, if any, are as well-served as the Forest is, courtesy of this excellent site of course, me & thee are truly spoilt).
Well done for finding that Herefordshire site and thanks for telling us about it. I've often been surprised what can be found by careful Googling, that's how I first found this FoD site !
One of my favourite sites is Genuki, altho it seems a bit weak wrt Herefordshire (perhaps while it's being redeveloped?), but some of it's pages are very helpful indeed, such as this example for a village I always think of being in Herefordshire, due to it's setting, appearance and fertile red soil, altho in fact it's in Glostershire except when it was once "in" Worcestershire !. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/RedmarleydAbitot
The site is strongly recommended for browsing around the UK, here's the Herefordshire section.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF
You've probably already found this one too, as mentioned by Graham earlier.
http://www.herefordshirefhs.org.uk/
I've recently found this site from an article in a UK Magazine. Just one of it's attractions is the ability to search and download old Hereford newspapers from the Great War years, and all free of charge.

Several old Trade Directories etc can be found from the link at base of this page. Most are FoD hence Glostershire, but there are some Herefordshire one's too

Many more Directories freely-accessible for England & Wales here, this is the Herefordshire homepage

Some general "Probert Ledbury" etc web-searching gave the following sites;
1950s photos of a Marje Taylor nee Probert at Fair Tree Farm,Ledbury.
http://www.old-ledbury.co.uk/HopPicking.htm
Which is from this website of old Ledbury photos, at first glance looks great, lots here !
Perhaps Admin would consider adding to this FoD FH site's Links pages ?

Also worth a look ?

Don't forget, searching this FoD forum will often yield relevant info, and maybe even find researchers sharing your family, past & maybe even present.

Cheers Graham, yes, that 1733 marriage is the one I found too, but was just trying to check if there was another one at Ledbury with a date closer to the time of Richard's. A cousin has been told about a marriage at Tenbury, which is probably of another couple, in 1747. I'm staying with the 1733 marriage until something closer than Tenbury is found.
Thanks.

Searching FamilySearch aka LDS site gives this possible marriage;
Name John Probert
Spouse's Name Sarah Boswood
Event Date 28 Oct 1733
Event Place All Saints,Hereford,Hereford,England
"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, FamilySearch
This search show there are several other Baptisms to a presumably different John & Sarah Probert in Herefordshire both before and after the above "set".
UPDATE: Oops, didnt see Graham's post while I was creating mine.

Thank you Mike and Jefff,
Yes, that's the baptism I was referring to when I posted that record ID... somewhat cautiously because I wasn't sure if I should post to the forum or send a ticket via help.
I have Benjamin's baptism but not Thomas, thanks for that. Maybe those names are possible clues if they followed the patronymic naming pattern... we've yet to see if that bears out.
Cheers,
Aussie

I'm researching the Probert family and the last entry I have found is the marrige of Richard Probert to Mary Jordan on 17 Sept 1768 in English Bicknor. I wonder if the Record ID 374193 which is the baptism of a Richard Probert is the same Richard Probert who married Mary Jordan.I'm doing the research from South Africa, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Thanks for your message. Sorry, I'm not sure 100% on that but unless our Richard married twice (Mary Jordan first) I only know of him marrying Sarah Hosfield/Haffield 1776 Bosbury, Hereford, England. But maybe they were related anyway. I'm doing our research from Tas mania, I think you are closer to the UK. :)
(Admin - I received an error message, apparently the second, third, fourth and fifth letter of the Australian state I live in is a not accepted word, which is really weird because it is preceded by the letter T and ends with nia, so I had to try as space after the first three letter. Please rejig your system to recognise our part of the world!). Thanks, Aussie
