George Bentley POPE (reply)

Thanks Paul.
No I realise he's almost certainly not committed any crime, just my imagination getting carried away, as you say he appears to have just gone into hiding to "cool-off". Still rather worrying though that he seems to disappear forever, I do hope he lived-out the rest of his life safely. Thanks for checking for emigration etc, I'm sure he stayed in the UK and kept a watch over his family's wellbeing.

Well well, interesting stuff, thanks chaps !

So is there still a chance he's "done a runner" with the income tax cash, or have I misunderstood Mike's post ?

Not sure that he's done a runner. The report in 1894 does not mention discrepancies in the accounts, just that they had not been made up. After the accounts had been completed by the accountant there is no mention of an allegation against George Bentley/Bailey Pope.

Seems he had been overawed by the volume of work, perhaps today we would call it stress.

Have searched for a death in the name of Pope, Bentley and Bailey, but, can find nothing that seems appropriate. Searched for emigration/immigration without success. In 1901 his wife describes herself as married, in 1911 she is a widow. I believe if a person is missing over seven years then they can be regarded as deceased. This may be why his wife said she was a widow in 1911.

There are three trees on Ancestry with George Pope. They all call him George Bailey Pope. None have anything after May 1894.

Searching Ancestry I see no mention after the 1891 Census, including on a Pope public tree.

??

UPDATE: Googling his name produced this extremely detailed history of the Baileys of Littledean, the paragaph abt George Bailey Pope echos the above posts and finishes with

"Despite extensive enquiries, nothing further was ever heard again of George Bailey Pope after May 1, 1894."

It appears that this web-book is essential reading for all researchers of the "Baileys of Littledean"

George Bentley POPE (reply)

The Bristol Mercury, Thursday, March 12, 1896

In April, 1894, Mr George Bentley Pope, assistant overseer of the parish of Lydney, disappeared, and with him went the whole of the rate books and other parish documents dealing with the rates. An accountant was employed to square matters, which cost the parish about £75, and one result was that many ratepayers, in spite of protestations that they had paid, failing the production of the receipt, had to pay again. The whereabouts of the official and his books remained a mystery. A few days ago it transpired that the books had been found. At the monthly meeting of the Parish Council at Lydney, held on Tuesday evening, Mr E. Loves, the chairman, read a letter from the Great Western Railway Company, who said there was a parcel of ratebooks lying at Paddington Station since April 30, 1894, and that the books could be handed over to the local authorities on payment of £2, dues accruing. This unexpected recovery of the books excited great interest in the Council and in the town, and it was mentioned that the overseers had determined to possess themselves of the missing books.

George Bentley POPE (reply)

From the BNA, Gloucester Citizen Thursday 03 May 1894,

To summarize:-

An article which indicates he told the Overseers he was going to Newport on the Monday but would be in Chepstow for the audit. However, he did not arrive. No tidings were received until Tuesday when letters were received revealing that he was in London (but giving no address) and referring to the pain and distress his absence had caused. The audit went ahead but, apart from the books not being made up-to-date there was nothing else worthy of note in them. “It is feared that the assistant overseer has overwrought his brain by over-work. In addition to his Parish business, which was considerable……..Mr POPE has been the collector of the Imperial Taxes of Lydney and Tidenham, in addition to which he had just undertaken the collection of the Income Tax for West Dean……..”

Baptism of Alfred POPE b1830 (reply)

Thanks Paul for filling in the gaps, clearly the family were all talented craftsmen, seems a shame to me we don't seem to see their like nowadays.
Also for confirming the name Swindaniah, one of the more unusual I've ever come across. Googling shows the same name in other North Glos families, is it Biblical, or maybe Romany ??
(eg "other children Parthenia ,Esther, Swindaniah and Obediedom", see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=533306.0, also http://www.stiles-genealogy.co.uk/trees/stiles/d10.htm)

Apologies for my incorrect title on my initial post wrt "Alfred b1837", should have read 1830 of course.

Perhaps someone can please shed some light on the reported disappearance of George B Pope born Lydney abt 1852, I do hope he resurfaced with no harm done ?

Alfred POPE b1837, a Lydney Tailor ? (reply)

The above thread mentions this household

1841 Coleford Sparrowshill ?
John Pope abt 1791 Gloucestershire, England Newland Gloucestershire
Alfred Pope abt 1830 Gloucestershire, England Newland Gloucestershire
Harriet Pope abt 1832 Gloucestershire, England Newland Gloucestershire
Jesse Pope abt 1821 Newland Gloucestershire
Maria Pope abt 1828 Gloucestershire, England Newland Gloucestershire"

I wonder if this Alfred was also a Tailor like his Cinderford descendants ?, based on this charming Obituary found within the Welsh Newspapers website;

From the Glamorgan Gazette of 10th April 1914

"The funeral of Mr Alfred Pope (85), a tailor of Lydney, took place in the parish churchyard at Lydney on Saturday. Mr Pope was a very active man, and up to two years ago reguarly rode his bicycle, and at 82 did 52 miles in one day upon his bicycle, and then challenged to ride, walk or box any man in the country at his age. He was a very in- teresting old gentleman, being of a most humane and kind-hearted disposition. The deceased was buried in his frock coat and collar."

UPDATE: Continued searching "Lydney" within the Welsh News site gave this story which appears to relate to Alfred's son, George B Pope.

From the Cardiff Evening Express of 7th May 1894;
"The Disappearance of an Overseer.
A week has now gone and there are no tidings of Mr. G. B. Pope, the assistant-overseer for Lydney, who failed last Monday morning to put in an appearance at the audit of his accounts at Chepstow. Mr. A.E. Clarke, the retiring overseer, who proceeded to Loudon early in the week, has not succeeded in gaining any intelligence about the missing man."

Joseph POPE 1837 Cinderford Tailor (reply)

Hello, my name is Hedley Sutton, I was very interested in your posting. I am the grandson of Kitty (Agnes) Pope great grandson of Joseph Pope (Headmaster at Elwood school). Kitty married Frank Fuller (a teacher) and moved to Chalford near Stroud and had a sizeable family (10). My mother is still living in Minchinhampton, Her eldest sister Hilary lives in Gloucester (I am not 100% sure but she must be well into her 90's as my Mum is 86). I live in Cinderford.
I would be very interested in any information regarding the Pope family history.
Best regards
Hedley

Joseph POPE 1837 Cinderford Tailor (reply)

Arthur Pope was my Great Grandfather. His son Alec Pope lived at the same address on High Street (48A) with his wife Helen (Rhona Helen Mary Baldwin) until his death in 2000. Alec was a keen geneaologist and local historian and has traced the Pope family back to Richard Pope and Mary Hollister of Stinchcombe in ~1620. I have his family tree (though sadly not the reams of source documentation he collected) if anyone is looking for information on local Popes.

Joseph POPE 1837 Cinderford Tailor (reply)

I remember one of the Pope Family.Arthur Pope a boot and shoe maker had a shop in Cinderford High St During the WW2,it was situated almost opposite to the entrance to Woodgate Rd [Formerly Heywood].When you took in shoes for repair it was always a week to be ready and when you called for them they were never ready but would be the following day, invariably they were.I think he had his own special system.
