Emily Fox Trapnell & children => New Zealand too c1909 ? (reply)

While searching Kenneth Trapnell I found another record which MAY help explain how this thread's originator Sarah is in New Zealand.

Kenneth Trapnell
New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, Passenger Lists
Name Kenneth Trapnell
Event Type Immigration
Event Date 03 Nov 1909
Event Place Wellington (other ports also listed), New Zealand
Gender Male
Nationality England
Shipping Company Shaw, Savill & Albion Co Ltd
Departure Place London
Ship Name Ionic
Arrival Place Wellington (other ports also listed)

This person is definitely "our" Kenneth, as the passenger list image has him with "housewife" Emily and sister Elfrida, but no sign of Frederick. It shows the Ionic left London bound for New York USA, and that the family were contracted to "land" at Wellington, New Zealand, as indeed were most of the other passengers (except for one landing at Cape Town). I wonder if this means the ship's route was effectively around the world; London - Cape Town S.A. - New Zealand - then across the Pacific to New York via the Panama Canal ??

So what were Emily Trapnell's intentions as to their final destination ?? Had she left Frederick ?.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DTSZ-78?cc=1609792

I should have read this earlier haha;

The SS Ionic was launched at Harland and Wolff (of Titanic fame) in Belfast in 1902. She was originally built to carry passengers and refrigerated meat between the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and began her maiden voyage from London to Wellington via Cape Town on 16 January 1903. Ionic was the first ship on the New Zealand route to be fitted with a Marconi wireless set.
taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Ionic_(1902)

------

I've tried to find evidence that Frederick Trapnell visited New Zealand at some point, but none found yet.

Earlier we noted Frederick's contact in the USA was his brother Ed M Trapnell.
A quick search of the UK Census finds this record from North Bristol which clarifies. No doubt there are more records but I suspect Sarah already has these;

1891 Hazleton Rd, Horfield, Barton Regis, Gloucestershire
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Frederick M W Malpas Head M 32 Professor Of Music. Lincolnshire, England
Francis H M Stephens Stepdaughter F 18 Ireland
Florence Spencer Niece F 13 Surrey, England
Alice K Sullivan Servant F 13 Bristol, England
Thomas Foley Adopted Son M 13 England

I'm sure Sarah already has these records, but for completeness here's another that popped-up, which helpfully gives Frederick's father's name;

Name Frederick Pearce Trapnell
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 08 Dec 1900
Event Place Clifton, Christchurch, Gloucestershire, England
Spouse's Name Emily Fox
Spouse's Marital Status Single
Spouse's Father's Name Benjamin Fox

-------

FamilySearch etc will undoubtedly have records of Edward's own emigration to the USA.

It's interesting to see they travelled on RMS Mauretania, the first of Cunard's "super liners" and a very well-known and popular ship. Entering service only a couple of years before the Trapnell's voyage, she soon gained the Blue Riband for the fastest trans-Atlantic crossing. I wonder if sailing on this prestigious Cunard ship shows the Trapnell's to be fairly well-off people ?. Mauretania's long career included being a troopship at Gallipoli during WW1, filling the void left by her sister-ship Lusitania after her infamous sinking by U Boat in 1915 which in many ways led to the USA entering WW1.

And then some evidence of an early rift:-

BNA Gloucestershire Chronicle - Saturday 10 May 1902

HUSBAND AND WIFE.
At Coleford Petty Sessions on Wednesday, Frederick P. Trapnell, of Ilfracombe, a gentleman formerly of independent means, was summoned by Emily Trapnell, his wife, now residing with her parents at Coleford, Forest of Dean, for a separation order and for maintenance. Mr. H. Williams was for the complainant, whilst Mr G. B. Taylor was for defendant, who did not appear. The parties were married only the end of 1900, at Clifton, at which time the defendant, who had no occupation, possessed an income of £2OO a year. Defendant then took the Somerset House Hotel, Clifton, and at the end of four months disposed of it for £1 700, making a clear profit of £3OO. They then went to live at No. 4, Bigglestone Park, Ilfracombe, the residence of defendant’s mother, who was exceedingly unkind to complainant, who was advised to go away for a change. Having determined to visit, her mother in the Forest, defendant gave her £2, and had sent £1 since; but that was all complainant had received from him. He declined to provide a home for her apart from his mother. Having resolved to return, defendant was asked to send the railway fare; but declined to do so, and refused to allow her to return. In cross-examination, complainant said she was not aware that the money with which the hotel was purchased was borrowed. Defendant was ordered to pay £1 a week towards his wife’s maintenance.

By that time they must have had Elfrida:-

COLEFORD
Monday- Before Messrs. T. T. Taylor and S. Thomas
HUSBAND AND WIFE.— Frederick P. Trapnell, a gentleman, of Ilfracombe, was brought up in custody charged with being in arrears of a maintenance order to the extent of £7, due to his wife, Emily Trapnell.—Prisoner admitted his responsibility but said he had no money, as he was solely dependent upon his mother, who was a woman of means and lived in house worth £1,500. He was only 23 years of age, and had no occupation. He had nothing to say against his wife.—Mr. H. Williams, solicitor, Coleford, appeared for the prosecutrix, and asked the Bench to convict prisoner as he had disregarded the previous order.— Prisoner was sentenced to one month’s hard labour in default of payment of the amount due.—Eventually the money was forthcoming, and prisoner was released from custody and joined his wife.

Daughters of Benjamin Fox and Emma Hawkins

Hello from New Zealand. I am seeking information of the daughters of Benjamin Fox (1844 -1917) and his wife Emma Hawkins (1846 - 1916).

I believe their daughters were:
1.Annie born about 1872 who married Stephen Baker and had children Stephen Ernest Baker, and Aubrey Harold Baker
2.Emily born about 1874 who married Fredrick Pearce Trapnell and had Kenneth Pearce Trapnell and Elfrida Trapnell.
3. Bessie born about 1883 who may have married John Foot and had a son Claude Foot
4. Rose Fox born about 1886.

I have some information on their eldest son Benjamin William Fox (1869) and am the granddaughter of their second son Tom born 1877.

I would love to hear from anyone who could help me discover more.

Many thanks

Sarah
