Lydney Seaman / Mariner (reply)

My "Opinion" is that they would have sailed the coastal waters - perhaps around to Swansea, down to Cornwall, maybe further. It is possible that they sailed greater distances, and/or deeper waters....

James WHITE 1798 - 1859 Lydney (reply)

Thanks for the reply, I have already looked at the records you mention and really just wanted another opinion. All the other replies seem to have gone onto other families while I am just really interested in the White family. It is difficult to be sure that you have the right connections as there are so many White families in that area. As you obviously are something of an expert of the Forest of Dean, I wonder if you could help me with another query. James is shown on various documents as a Waterman and Mariner and his eldest son, Richard, is shown on one census as a Seaman. Do you know whether these terms refer to what we would call a deep sea sailor or just someone who travelled on the Severn between perhaps Lydney and Bristol. Are there any records of such people anywhere that I could look at? Unfortunately, all my research has to be done by the internet as I do not live in the UK now. Many thanks for your help,

Elaine

STEPHENS of Lydney (reply)

Still wondering where "my" Richard appeared from. There is no clear record of him before he and his wife Sarah bury a daughter, Mary, at Awre in 1745. They baptise my g...grandmother (another Mary) and her sister Elizabeth at Blakeney Chapel in 1746 and 1749 respectively. Sarah died and was buried at Awre in 1754, and in 1756 Richard marries Mary Lovell, also of Awre parish. Mary (Lovell) Stephens died in 1772, buried at Awre, Richard (of FOD) dies in 1805, aged 81.

The Stephens family seems fairly well anchored in Lydney . . .and it was a parish used by extra parochial FOD folks as well . . .but I can't seem to find a link between my Richard and any other Stephens group.

He would have been a contemporary of your Henry's father. We know the Wickendon's and the Clarke's end up as neighbors in the next generation, so perhaps there is a link there somewhere?

Looking for parents of James WHITE married in 1819

My GG Grandfather was James White. He married Harriet Robins in Lydney Parish Church on 19th December 1819. His parents names are not shown on the marriage record but I think he was the son of Richard White and Esther and baptised in Lydney on 8th July 1798. James occupation is shown on census forms as Waterman/Mariner. Does anyone have any knowledge of the family, I would really like to take my family back further if possible.
