Crown and anchor beer house, Yorkley (reply)

Hi Dave,

according to

http://www.gloucestershirecamra.org.uk/pubs/glospubs/new/AllGlosPubsDatabase/AllGlosPub...

There was a Crown Inn at Yorkley, GL15 4TP.

"When the property estate of the Forest Brewery in Mitcheldean was offered for sale in 1923, the Crown was included and the inventory of sale described the inn as a ‘very attractive property, lately rebuilt at considerable outlay, stone building with rough cast’. On the ground floor there was a ‘bar, smoke room, beer stores, kitchen, scullery, larder, etc.’ There were three bedrooms and a club room on the first floor and a further bedroom and a lumber room on the second floor. To the rear there was an ‘excellent range of stone outbuildings, urinal, two closets, wash-house, coal store, small garden.’

The particulars went on to say that ‘the property is of freehold tenure and let to Mrs Elizabeth Morgan, a tenant of about 24 years’ standing, on quarterly tenancy at £60 per annum.’"

Owners are only given from 1891 to 1923, so it may or may not be "your" pub.

Ian

Crown and anchor beer house, Yorkley

In the 1861 census my ancestor James Smith is recorded at Bailey Hill as 'Crown & anker beer house sawer'. He is known to have been a timber sawyer, so possibly ran the Crown and Anchor on the side.

So far as I am aware there is no Crown and Anchor pub at Yorkley now. Is there any knowledge of one in the past?

Thanks in advance
