I have only just found this but David is the youngest of a family of nine children born to John HART(c1787-1851) and Hannnah STERRY(c1796-1874). My great Grandfather Solomon, was number seven (c1830-1905) so we share the same great great grandparents, John and Hannah. Their life together was not happy in later years as they are not together in 1841 census. John was unfortunately in Bridewell which seems to be a correction-centre or jail. I hope some day to discover more of the reason, it could not have been serious or he would have been in Gloucester. He died in Gloucester Infirmary in 1851. So it accounts for why Hannah is alone with the younger children in the census' of 1841 and 1851.

David HART 1839 Longhope / Blaisden (reply)

I have only just found this but David is the youngest of a family of nine children born to John HART(c1787-1851) and Hannnah STERRY(c1796-1874). My great Grandfather Solomon, was number seven (c1830-1905) so we share the same great great grandparents, John and Hannah. Their life together was not happy in later years as they are not together in 1841 census. John was unfortunately in Bridewell which seems to be a correction-centre or jail. So it accounts for why Hannah is alone with the younger children in the census' of 1841 and 1851.

If you want to know more of the Sterrys they have a dedicated STERRY web page.
If you go back a generation you will find that John's parents, John and Elizabeth had 12 children. You will find their grave in BLAISDEN churchyard quite close to the porch.

Most of your questions were answered by Slowhands, I confirm that Mary Ann Preece is the mother of David's children. The Forest of Dean web pages shows them all but only gives mother's Christian names. Use http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/
with advanced search and you get her former name. I hadn't found the marriage.

If you want to contact me then I am in the forest-of-dean.net user list. By using their records you will get back to the earliest Harts on the site Anthony Hart 1612-1680 and his father I think Wyllyam.

Both of my Forest of Dean Grandparents Francis (1870) and Evangeline (1875) had the name HART so researching has been complicated. I think that I have linked them back to brothers Thomas 1691 and Anthony c1709. Any chance anyone can confirm that please?

Good luck with your searches David.

Re Barnwood Hospital ? (reply)

Thanks Slowhands for confirming my understanding.

I'm sorry I didn't grasp the full meaning of what you said earlier.
In the various associated threads (and in my lifetime) I've seen/heard plenty of mentions of Hospitals at both Horton Rd and Coney Hill, but never a separate "Barnwood" hospital too. Also in my understanding Coney Hill was/is vaguely within the suburb nowadays called Barnwood. Furthermore your prior post stated that the early "Barnwood Hospital" later became known as "Coney Hill Hospital".
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=14551

It also still seems surprising to me that a relatively small city should have three such hospitals all within the same area and timescale, in addition to one at the larger city of Bristol.

Hence imho my confusion was not unreasonable and I believe this clarification will help others too.

Re Barnwood Hospital ? (reply)

As I said earlier Barnwood House was distinct from the nearby Coney Hill site, again distinct from the Wootton facility nearer the City Centre. The later two coming under the NHS when it was formed, the first Barnwood site was private.

Re Barnwood Hospital ? (reply)

Thanks Slowhands for that. Please can you help me ?. I've read and re-read the prior threads on this subject but I'm a little confused (no change there..). My local knowledge of Gloster is ok but not as good as it should be particularly wrt the suburbs. I've driven thro' and around Barnwood "area" many times but that's all I know of the area.

As I understand it from the above threads and websites there were two County Asylums in Gloster, first at Horton Road 1823-1988, then second at Coney Hill 1883-1994.
Were they both operating alongside each other for a time as County Asylums, I guess so although it seems odd to me ?
In later years (80s/90s) were they both part of the NHS or had one become "private" ?.

Until today I'd assumed Barnwood Hospital/Home was one of the above, but presumably no ?

A quick Google has just found the following link which suggests to me "Barnwood" is neither Horton Rd or Coney Hill, but I'm still not sure. I must admit as a layman new to the subject, I'm surprised that the area had two never mind three such hospitals, hence my problems understanding it all. Hopefully you can please once again clear my mudded mind ?.

Re Barnwood this potted recent history is good, sorry I can't clarify it by highlighting but I seem to have somehow broken my forum posting webpage !?

"From 1948 to 1962 Barnwood House advertised its services in the Journal of Mental Science with the following words:

"A REGISTERED HOSPITAL (outside the National Health Service) for the CARE and TREATMENT of LADIES and GENTLEMEN suffering from NERVOUS and MENTAL DISORDERS. Within two miles [3 km] of the Western and London Midland Regional Railway Stations at Gloucester, the Hospital is easily accessible by rail from London and all parts of the United Kingdom. It is beautifully situated at the foot of the Cotswold Hills, and stands in its own grounds of over 300 acres [1.2 km²]. Voluntary Patients of both sexes are also received for treatment. Special accommodation is also provided at three villa residences, all of which stand in their own grounds and are entirely separate from the main Hospital. All the most modern methods of treatment including electric shock and prefrontal leucotomy are used."

But the "most modern methods of treatment" were losing their allure by the 1960s and, in spite of a new advertisement appearing in 1963 with no mention of ladies and gentleman, or leucotomy and electric shock, and the railway stations replaced by the A417, Barnwood House experienced financial difficulties and closed in 1968."

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnwood_House_Hospital
Enlarging this site's photo shows it was a typically impressive & large Victorian building, and it doesn't (to me) appear the same building as the Horton Road or Coney Hill Hospitals.

Please can you confirm whether or not I have got this all correct ? Sorry if it's common knowledge but I can't find any other mentions of Barnwood on the forum and this clarification may help other users such as David Hart.

Thankyou again, Jeff.

Ernest Thomas HART 1879 -1954 Longhope -> Pontypridd (reply)

Hi again David and Happy New Year to you & yours, I hope your elderly relative's warm n well, how lucky you are to have such a good source of family history !. The mental hospital you refer to is Coney Hill which was located on the outskirts of Gloucester, it's now closed. As immature/ignorant Forest kids in the 70s we unfortuantely used the phrase "being sent to Coney Hill" as a derogatory insult; I'm pleased I actually know what we were referring to, all thro' this forum. If you read the following prior threads, found using the "search" link, you'll see it was the County Mental Hospital, previously the Lunatic Asylum. Within the thread is a mention of the Hospital's records for staff & patients, which hopefully you'll find of use via the Glos Archives website.

On a slight aside, my mother now in Cinderford originated from the Longhope area in the 40s, in fact we were there last weekend. Do you know of Hart's Barn ?. In recent years its become a tourist "attraction" as a craft centre from what I can gather, having only driven past without going in. I wonder if it's part of your family history ?.

The Harts (reply)

Hi David and welcome to this great forum and website. Unfortunately this thread http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=16574 is rather an old one, almost 3 years. If you look at the various poster's names you'll see that apart from "Slowhands" (THE venerable font of all knowledge on this site and a leading light to us all), t'other names do NOT appear as blue hyperlinks. This means they've not visited the forum for several months and have been cut-off as it were (see "Help-FAQ" section for further info). If their names were blue this would enable you to send them direct mails to their email inboxes, so negating the need for them to hopefully spot your message while visiting the forum. Therefore sadly it's unlikely they will see your post. That said, if you email the forum moderators its just possible they may be able to help you.

Moving on, did you realise that the real beauty of this site is you can freely search the huge Parish Records database. Similarly the site contains many other interesting items that may also be searched.
From this site's database I can find baptisms for a few Ernest Harts but no son's of David Hart. Similarly I cannot find the Marriage you seek. However it doesnt help that I have no dates at all, please can you help ?. Clearly this website/databse is for the Forest of Dean only so won't include Ponty area (I lived there while at Poly in the 80s) or Bristol.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Using the FreeBMD website and searching for "David HART" in "Glamorgan" (for Ponty & area), I see a long line of them, presumably related to a greater or lesser extent, going right back... The most recent entry is a Marriage of David S Hart & Young abt Mar 1958, is this you ?.

The site shows the preceding Marriage:
Surname Given Name District Volume Page Transcriber
Marriages Sep 1905
HART Ernest Thomas Pontypridd 11a 807 michaelpilgrim
to
Marriages Sep 1905
RENFREE Elizabeth Jane Pontypridd 11a 807 Columbine

Now search for all Births of "Hart" & "Renfree" you'll find these Records:

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page

Births Sep 1914
Hart David R Renfree Pontypridd 11a 1559

Births Jun 1918
Hart John D Renfree Pontypridd 11a 1195

Births Sep 1919
Hart Clifford R Renfree Pontypridd 11a 1241

I presume they are some of your ancestors?

If you now use FreeBMD and search for "Marriage" of "David Hart" and "Mary Preece" but for "All" Counties/Districts, you will get only one (thankfully) match:

Surname Given Name District Volume Page Transcriber
Marriages Jun 1868
Hart David Hereford 6a 847 chrishoare

(NB I didnt search for Mary ANN as it might not have given a hit, if her second name hadnt perhaps been entered on the marriage register)

Working backwards to check by searching just for "Mary Preece", gives the following:

Surname Given Name District Volume Page Transcriber
Marriages Jun 1868
Preece Mary Ann Hereford 6a 847 DaveM

The fact the Volume & Page details, 6a & 847, agree for both records shows this is a correct marital match.
(NB there are MANY Mary Preeces going back several generations, most if not all from the Here/Worcs/Salop Borders).

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/districts.pl?r=43445109&d=bmd_1322564104

SO, if these dates seem correct to your researches, and these are your grandparents, they were married in "Hereford" District.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/hereford.html

Clearly, using FreeBMD# you should be able to trace more of your family's records, some of whom may be in the Forest area so will perhaps be on this database. If they are then you'll get far more detail information for each record.

Hope this helps, good luck !

# be warned that with FreeBMD not being a subscription website it is a work-in-progress database and may possibly be incomplete in some areas.
