Robert Marshall - Huntley shoemaker (reply)

Hi again, welcome back.

After some searching I found the PR you mention, Robert's Baptism from 1867. Now I'm sure you've seen other related PRs or Census' saying otherwise, but this just states Robert's father Robert is a "shoemaker"...

Do you know Huntley ?. I have family there, even nowadays with considerable 1970s housing expansion it's still a small, quiet, one pub/one shop village.
http://www.francisfrith.com/huntley/photos/

In Robert's time apart from the local Manor House the vast majority of the relatively few inhabitants were relatively poor land workers spread over a large area. On that basis I see no reason to imagine it was capable of supporting a fulltime maker of high class shoes. Regardless of what Robert perhaps claimed to be, or indeed what his skills were, I think the vast bulk of his work was making & repairing working people's footwear, fairly simple work (for him) so not particularly well paying within a relatively poor area. He would perform this job long into old age, so not much scope for his son to also work locally in the same business. If he had called himself a cordwainer a few centuries earlier then yes he may well have been a top shoemaker
http://privat.bahnhof.se/wb910410/8c0af07e-3deb-45e7-9bf7-830a964ac76e-9.html

However by his time I suspect despite his skillset his Huntley setting meant he was "just" a fairly typical shoemaker/cobbler. I've seen plenty of examples of all sorts of workers claiming via a Census form to be higher up the social ladder than they were, including bottom-rung agricultural labourers claiming to be farmers and so on; many shoemakers called themselves cordwainer long after the true meaning of the word was irrelevant. Indeed, in modern times we find "bin-men" sometimes called "refuge collection engineers", for example. As someone who devoted eight years hard- studying while completing a shop-floor apprenticeship to qualify as an engineer I find this mis-use of a word annoying, and that's not in any way denigrating the important and unpleasant work the bin-men do.

I've spent years since childhood building increasingly complex & intricate engineering models & still have those skillsets now. Sadly, and in spite of my long efforts teaching him and his real enthusiasm trying to learn, my own son is indeed "cack-handed" and lacks the required dexterity, care, patience, co-ordination etc to produce hand-made work like mine. Sometimes such "skills" cannot be taught & don't run in the veins despite a father's best efforts at nurturing it.

Finally, you ask why the work wasn't passed down. I surmise that by his time, the late Victorian age, everything including shoes and working boots was available from factories, no doubt far cheaper mass-produced than individually handcrafted. I don't know when mail-order buying was available but I suspect that was possible in Huntley in Robert's day, with the close proximity of the GWR railway etc etc. If not, only a few miles away towns like Newent and Cinderford had more shoe & boot shops particularly for the colliers within the Forest, so maybe the occasional people in Huntley who needed new shoes shopped further afield, there were daily road carriers to Gloster even in those days. For a working man a pair of boots was a major investment, and once bought would be expected to last years, helped by covering the sole in hob nails; so yes Huntley might need one shoe repairer, but I cannot believe the village c1880 could support more than one at a time and just making topclass shoes even if he could. Many traditional old village jobs like this have been stopped by mass-production & fast transport links.
This photo of just one of the shoe shops in Cinderford, for example, shows a range of presumably factory-produced boots available c1900. In my youth in the 1970s Cinderford was a shopper's paradise compared to "little" Huntley, 100 years before the difference was greater still.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/cinderford/pages/page_71.html

Of course, it's also possible your Robert's son just didnt want to spend his life cooped-up in a one-man workshop, maybe he yearned for fresh air and company, we just don't know ??.

I do hope this helps.

All the very best to you and yours, keep researching, Jeff.

ps sorry for not replying to your last email,
You asked what "Biddy" was short for; if you havent already Googled it then Biddy is apparently short for Bridget, does that fit ?.

I am not sure if he was poor himself I presumed he was well off because of his skills but I think his son was just a Labourer so the skills did not pass down. I also thought Cordwainers worked on better shoe leather and did work for gentry etc quality workmanship? And so I presumed would have earned more than a cobbler?

The Shoemakers & Cordwainers that I have come across all worked from home.
If Robert was poor he couldn't have been making much money out of it, so perhaps not surprising his sons sought employment elsewhere?

MARSHALL
I am hoping that someone will have an answer to my question. Robert Marshall was a master shoemaker. Not a cobbler; in Huntley.
Record_ID: 90021
Entry_Number: 777

What I want to find out is did he own the business or work in it? And what happened to it??? Why did he not leave the business or hs skill to his sons???? As would have been the usual thing in those days??? It would seem that the next generation down did not work in that field at all? In fact it would seem that thay were quite poor even though his occupation would seem to be one that would have indicated a relitively good standard of living for that time?

Hi Griffin-Lady,
welcome back to the forum, thanks for your detailed / helpfull post, you have clearly been very busy already ! :-).

Re Jonas Marshall c late 1700s I also tried searching via the LatterDay Saints site and this has thrownup an unusual spelling variant that you may not have considered thus far, I know I wouldn't have. It does appear within this site's FoD PRs but is not flagged using Soundex, namely MARTIAL etc.
Searching these variations may help extend your lines ?

The relevant PRs within this site's database are:

Robert Marshall - Huntley (reply)

MARSHALL :
All males have died young or have no issue. This is what I have so far:

JONAS MARSHALL - registered as the Grooms father in ROBERT MARSHALL'S (The Shoe Maker B-1812) second Marriage: - I cannot find any details of this man and therefor assume this name maybe wrong. It could be JAMES or JOHN ?
First Marriage.
ROBERT MARSHALL (B - 1812 D - 1899) - M - ANNE EVANS( B ? D-1858) MARRIED in 1833.
Robert's occupation is recorded as Master shoe maker. He appears as this on the Slater's 1868 Directory of Newent - Huntley and on marriage records for his and his children's marriages.
Robert and Anne had 3 children I can trace:
ROBERT MARSHALL (B - 1837) (D - 1857) Age 20 yrs.
MATILDA MARSHALL (B - 1839) (D- 1858) Age 19yrs.
WILLIAM EVANS MARSHALL (B-1841 - D?
Roberts first wife ANNE died in 1858 the same year as Matilda their daughter and only a year after Robert their first son.
Q - I would love to find out how and why they all died so close to each other and what happened to young William? Did he survive grow up and have children???? He appears as a 9 yr old on the 1851 Census.

Second Marriage
ROBERT MARSHALL (B-1812) -M- ELIZA HARPER ( B-1836 D-1915) in 1860
They had 8 children. - This is where it gets complicated. Their first girl and boy were named Robert and Matilda. There was only 2 boys:
Matilda (B-1861)
Emily (B-1862)
Rosa (B-1865)
Robert (B-1867)
Charles (B-1869)
Caroline (B-1872)
Ada (B-1876)
Alice (B-1878)

There are marriages registered for both of the boys in 1895.
CHARLES MARSHALL (B- 1869) married Edith Francis SMITH
I can only find one child a girl from this union -
MURIAL ROSE MARSHALL
CHARLES Married a second time in 1937
This time to MARY ROSE SMITH. There is no record of a child born to them
And they were both past child bearing years.

ROBERT MARSHALL (B-1867) -M- MATILDA NASH in 1895
They had 13 Yes THIRTEEN children between 1895 and 1916.
5 of these children were boys.
ROBERT GEORGE MARSHALL(B- 1895 D-1918 WW1 Age 23yrs) No children
CHRISTOPHER MARSHALL (B-1897 D-1917 WW1 Age 19yrs) No children.
Rose Evelyn (B-1898)
Jessie Lilian (B-1901)
Florence Hester (B-1903)
Un-Named female (I call her Elizabeth B-1905 D-1905)
Beatrice (B-1905 D-1905)TWINS Died at or shortly after birth.
Emily Eliza (B-1906)
Clarice MAtilda (B-1907)
ALBERT EDWARD MARSHALL (B-1910 D-1910)
LIONAL CHARLES MARSHALL (B-1910 D-1910) Twins died age 6 weeks.
Doreen Adelaide (B-1914)
REGINALD VERDUN PHILIP MARSHALL (B-1916 D-1942 WW2 Age 26yrs.)

REGINALD V P MARSAHLL- M- AGNES ELEANOR GRIFFITHS Abt 1936?
He died in 1942 leaving 2 children one of which was male.
CHRISTOPHER S J MARSHALL born in the 1930s
He had two sons only one of which married and had a son who also had a young son but sadly this child died recently bringing an end to this male line.

Q) I would like help to find out Who "Jonas" the father of Robert the Shoe Maker was, did he have Bothers?, and did Robert the shoe maker have brothers? If so:(Another MARSHALL LINE?) Why did Robert the shoe makers first wife Anne, son Robert and daughter Matilda die so close to each other. Was there an accident? Disease? What happened to young WILLIAM EVAN MARSHALL? Did he survive, grow up to marry and have children-? (Another possible MARSHALL line?)
Q) Robert the shoe maker and his second wife Eliza had two sons Robert and Charles, Why didn't they become Master shoe makers like their father? Did Charles have any boys from either of his marriages to Edith or Mary Rose Smith? ( Could there be a live MARSHALL line from Charles?)
Q) Robert and ELiza's Son Robert had 13 children with Matilda NASH.
Most of them appear on the 1911 Census. MATILDA was educated as she filled in the census. She listed all her children at the time as 11. 7 living and 4 dead. The dead included 2 sets of twins. Girls born in 1905 and the twin boys Albert and Lionel born in 1910. The last 2 children did not appear on the census as they were born in 1914 and 1916.

Does anyone know anything more about the shoe maker in Huntley the family were there a long time.

Thanks
