Also seems to be a Silvester Canning in area (Upleadon//Rudford?) and Canning in Upton on Severn in 1600s, but having difficulty working out family connections ...if there are some. Don’t live in area, so not very familiar with geographical connections/ancient travel patterns etc.

I am still struggling with parents for John Canning who married Nancy (Ann) Hewlett, however, just came across this reference to Newent (where coincidentally their son James Canning (b. 1784) served as an apprentice cooper.We know that a yeoman by the name of Taylor is associated with the marriage bond for John & Nancy - so is this a coincidence, or does anyone no more about the history/families in Newent in 1700s please ? Newent – 1776 – Sale by Thomas Brown(e) of Gloucester & Elizabeth his wife – one of the children of Ellis & Alice Taylor (both deceased) of an interest in an estate in Newent, to Ellis Taylor (Gloucester). Names a messuage, 12 closes, orchards / fields & names last 3 tenants – Wm Canning, J Amphlett, & Wm Baylis. Ellis Taylor (senr) held half share of the property, acquired in 1731 from Henry & Sarah Haynes. Large sheet parchment signed / sealed by Thomas & Eliz Brown, witnessed by Jno Skinner Stocks & Wm Pitt.

Many thanks for this. This is the my ancestor & I have a copy of this document, however, I have been struggling to find a record of his birth in the area - or the John Canning (s) I have found in Gloucestershire/Warkwickshire/Forest of Dean have not been specific enough to make a conclusive connection.I think the person who contacted me in the summer was to inform me about some Canning(s) being employed on an estate somewhere - although it may have been in C19th rather than C18th. I have worked out the descendants of John and Nancy (also known as Ann) who lived in Frampton on Severn after their marriage, but at brick wall going further back. Anyone aware of any records relating to Yeoman that might provide leads please? I know John Canning and Ann Hewlett's son John was a cooper in Newent in 1799 and later moved to Bristol. Also have some good leads on Ann Hewlett's ancestors (Verney/Longney etc), but still struggling to confirm father of John Canning born in 1750s.

During the summer someone kindly emailed me some suggestions to investigate about a Canning who was employed in the Forest of Dean. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate this email now, so would be grateful if the sender could re-contact me. My Canning relatives were based in Bristol post-1800, but I know that John Canning married in Gloucester & subsequently lived in Frampton-on-Severn - so mainly intrested in pre-1800 ancestors (or any descendants from to Canning/Hewlett marriage). In the Miscellaneous downloads - Marriage Banns (sample 2) - is copy of my x Grandfather's Marriage Licence - 1777

As a Licence gives more information i.e. age, status, occupation, Parish where he came from - some of this information does not appear on his parish entry marriage (the next day). Perhaps John CANNING's licence would also give more information.

ILMINGTON

Acreage: 3,325.
Population: 1911, 576; 1921, 536; 1931, 531.
Until 1931 this parish formed the centre of a detached portion of the county of Warwick surrounded on the north and east by Worcestershire and on the west by Gloucestershire. In that year, however, the intervening Worcestershire parishes were annexed to Warwickshire. Ilmington is a long narrow parish, 4 miles from north to south with a breadth varying from less than a mile up to 2 miles. The ground is very hilly, rising from 225 ft. in the north where the road from Stratford-on-Avon to Chipping Campden enters the parish to 833 ft. where the same road crosses the southwestern boundary.

In this high ground of the Ilmington Downs are several quarries, formerly worked both for building stone and road metal. Between the Downs and the village Nebsworth Hill is crossed by a track, known as Pig Lane, which may have been used in Roman times to connect the Ricknield Street and the Fosse Way. A little north of, and below, this track is a small rectangular earthwork which has been considered a Roman camp but is more probably medieval. (fn. 1)

Half a mile due south of this is the hamlet of Foxcote, lying in a hollow with Windmill Hill to the east of it. A windmill belonging to the manor is mentioned as early as 1295 (fn. 2) and as late as 1697. (fn. 3) The southern extremity of the parish is occupied by the hamlet of Compton Scorpion.

I'll take a browse throught that. Based on my John Canning (buried in Frampton on Severn), the only two births I've managed to find online that are roughly around correct date for him are:
John Canning baptised in Idlicote, Warks to John & Susan (Susannah?) Canning
John Canning baptised Clifford Chambers, Gloucestershire 3.8.1755 son of Jon Canning & Hannah Canning.

There is also one baptised around 1750 to Francis & Mary Canning in Ilmington - who I have a feeling are linked to Foxcote.

Think I'll have to see if I can make any other connections to get to the bottom of this.

The only other Canning that comes up connected with St.Mary de Lode Church (where John & Ann married under licence. Her name appeas as Nancy.) is Robert Canning (a widow from Hartpury) marrying Maria Cheston on 19 July 1826. I'm presuming he may be one of the Canning family from Hartpury/Foxcote - although I have never found any evidence to suggest my family are connected to them (other than sharing surname). However, I have found it difficult to locate a family tree for the Hartpury/Foxcote Cannings to verify this.

Also does anyone know about the the College Precincts to Gloucester Cathedral and who used to live there (i.e. would the Cathedral records contain any interesting information) please? ( I live outside the area.)

I've also now discovered there was a Charles Edward Canning who got married in Frampton on Severn in 1914, so will check his family back to see if it links up with mine.

I know that my ancestor John CANNING (b. 1757 approx) was married to Ann Hewlett (b. 1754 approx) and lived in Frampton on Severn, where he was buried on 25 Jan 1798 aged 41. ( I have details of their children and descendants.) However, I am trying to trace where John Canning (b. 1757) was born, his parents and more information about the marriage to Ann Hewlett.
