Hester Grafton & King Charles, Oswestry - Frampton by river. (reply)

Thanks Jefff, as you can see from the original posting date this has been a frustrating sticking point for nearly ten years now! I revisit every now and again to see if anything new has been added anywhere. Thanks also for the links, interesting to see how busy the Severn was.

Hester Grafton & King Charles, Oswestry - Frampton by river. (reply)

Hi Vix, welcome back.
As you'll know Oswestry is about 19 miles from Shrewsbury, which like Frampton is on the River Severn. It's entirely possible if not likely that someone born in Oswestry could reach Shrewsbury in half a day by horseback, and could then travel south by river to Frampton in another day or two. In those days rivers and the first canals were the UK's main transport arteries, far quicker and easier than using roads.

This website, as just one example, states that Severn traffic was at it's highest in the mid 1700s, with 100,000 tons of coal being shipped every year, for example - ships as large as 40 tons could navigate upstream to Shrewsbury.

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-network/river-severn...

Apparently in the mid 1700s the Severn was the SECOND ! busiest river in Europe - at a guess I suspect the busiest of all was the Rhine ?.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/content/articles/2008/09/26/river_severn_feature.shtml

In thse days the river was busy with hundreds of Severn trows, quite literally the equivalent in size of a modern 40 ton artic truck.
https://www.severntales.co.uk/coracle.html

Hoping this helps, J

Hester Grafton & King Charles (reply)

Still stuck on the mysterious Hester Grafton. I've found a birth for one in Oswestry in 1797 which would make her a similar age to King Charles but not sure how likely movement from there to Frampton would be. Does anyone else have these make an appearance in their trees?

Just wondered if anyone had come across any GRAFTON family? I'm still unable to find a birth, although it would be about 1804 as death record in 1834 gives age as 30.

'On the transcription of the Charles/Grafton marriage on this site, it states that they were married with? parents consent. So I presume she was a minor, and therefore born after 1800?'

I have a marriage in 1833 by J H Malpas at Awre where it states 'with the Consent of Parents'. The man was born 1791, his father died 1816 and his mother 1808. The woman was born 1787. I wouldn't call this pair minors!
Before Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753 there was no lower legal age of marriage, except during the 1650s when it was sixteen for 'men' and fourteen for 'women'. In 1753 it was fixed at fourteen for men and twelve for women, and remained at those ages until the Age of Marriage Act in 1929, which raised it to sixteen for both.
