Jeff

Thanks for the clarification.

It reminds me of a story several years ago when I was working with a company in the the London area. We had some material we desperately needed here in states and were going to fly it into Atlanta from Gatwick. But bad weather in the Atlanta area had temporarily closed the airport there. Seeking alternate routes, I got a call from a counterpart in London who joyously announced that he had arranged to have it flown into Houston, where "you can drive over and pick it up". I responded that it was a nice effort but the driving time to Houston is two days. "Oh", he responded, "back to the drawing board." He thought that if he could just get it into the country the rest would be easy. The vastness of the US is so much in contrast to the geography in Europe. Neither of us really appreciates the difference and how it can effect so many things.

So I take your point that 20/25 miles can make a big difference in your area.

William STAIT 1817 & family - Temple Guiting area (reply)

Hi Jim,
hope the weather's not too bad where you are ?

As Slowhands has stated this is a Forest of Dean forum/site, so about 15 miles southwest of Gloucester city and the opposite side of the city/county from your research area by the look of it. Hence not really our area of knowledge/records. I realsie this may seem odd given the vastness of North America but altho only 25 or so miles away the Forest of Dean is a world away from the Cotswolds in so many ways.

Another VERY strongly-recommended website which should help you get to know an area of the UK, especially from a C19th viewpoint, is the excellent Genuki site which mixes genealogy with local geography & history, I often use it.

eg for Temple Guiting
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/GuitingTemple/Gaz1868.html

This site has a huge amount of useful information about a given area, plus good guidelines wrt the boundaries of the various local government registration districts as they were thro the years, eg Temple Guiting & Winchcombes here
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/north%20cotswold.html

Do hope they help you further, both these extensive websites will probably help you enormously given thorough study, good luck !.

PS re the church this may be of interest

William STAIT 1817 & family - Temple Guiting area (reply)

Hi Jim,
I researched the STAITE family a little as my mother's closest friend in the 1950s was a Mary Staite. It transpired she was "only" a Staite thro marriage so I didnt do much research at all into that side of her family. However, as suggested above, all my findings showed the Staite/Stait lines were and probably still are quite prominent names in Gloucester but in her case no Dean connections at all.
I suggest you also try the Gloucester Archives websites, plus searching the Gloucester Citizen/Journal newspapers via the British Newspaper Archive website may well bear fruit, please see following threads.

slowhands

Many thanks for your reply. I have a couple of questions.

You said
Name: Mary Norton & William Hait
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1839
Registration district: Winchcomb
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume Number: 11
Page Number: 559
STAIT William
NORTON Mary
North Cotswolds Temple Guiting St Mary
1839 1 10

The last line is 1839 1 10. What is this reference? I have a copy of their marriage certificate dated 13 Aug 1839, so it is not their marriage date.

The marriage certificate indicates the wedding was at the "Church of T. Guiting". Would this have been St. Mary's Church?

You also listed the following:

STAITE William
STAITE NORTON
1841 Cheltenham Winchcombe, Guiting 2 122

STAITE George
STAITE NORTON
1844 North Cotswolds Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water 2 420

STAITE Lucy A
STAITE NORTON
1849 Cheltenham Winchcombe, Guiting 5 85

What is the source of these records and what are the references at the end of each record (ie 2 122, 2 429)?

Sorry if I am asking things that should be obvious but I am a yank, who has been researching my family in the US and Canada, and now that I am starting to expand into Europe I find a whole different set of sources, websites, terms, etc. It can be a bit intimidating to us beginners :-)

Thanks again

George STAITE 1854 ish Guiting area - interesting story (reply)

The name Staite caught my eye, hence my initial response, because these were our Neighbours when I grew up in Swindon, Wiltshire.

This is the 1911 Census, Wiltshire, Crowdy's Hill, Upper Stratton, Swindon

George STAITE - 58 - born Guitings, Glos
Mary - 53
Percy - 21
Walter - 18 - (Walter Charles STAITE) - born Blunsdon, Wiltshire) - who lived in this house until his death.
Florence - 14
Ernest - 11

----

Ironically, many, many years ago, my late Dad borrowed (or was given?) from our neighbour Walter Charles STAITE a Saw - stamped W S STAITE - which Walter used when he was working in the Great Western Railways - this Saw (made by Rye & Co of New Swindon) never went back - because it's in our garage with my husband's tools.

Not sure whether there are any Forest of Dean connections which this forum is all about , but already your information seems a little bit incorrect from the Gloucestershire CD's I have. If you click my envelope, will see what else I can find.
