Meeks Family Tree (reply)

I also have George (1714) as son of John and Clare. He married Margaret Teague in 1738 in Welsh Bicknor. One of their (at least) nine children was Thomas (1758), who was my g4-grandfather.

I am always pleased when someone sheds a little more light on the history of the Meeks!

Thanks,

The Meek Family Tree (reply)

Hi, Kristeen,
I can confirm that George Meek was the 9th. child of Joseph Meek and Ann Harris. He was born the 6th. May 1801. George's brother, Joseph Meek, who married Hannah Cook was the second child, born December 1782.
Can find no record of George Meek and Elizabeth Davis, nor any of their children - guess they may be the descendents of the other Joseph and Hannah Baldwin, who caused me so much confusion and many sleepless nights!!
This is the male line of my tree:
John Meek (1660 - 1695); John Meek (1682); John Meek (1715); Joseph Meek (1749); Joseph Meek (1782); Solomon Meek (1830); John Meek (1859); Maurice Martin Meek (1901); Anthony Mervyn Meek (1940) (my Brother) and Richard Meek (1964). Does this help, at all? More detailed information if required.
Best wishes & good luck!
Marion.

Meek Family Tree (reply)

Marion: thanks for all the information, and thanks to everyone who contributed to this extremely interesting thread.

However, it seems to have turned up another problem for me - i.e. that I am now in a complete muddle with my info!

For instance: I now have two George Meeks in my tree - one born around 1800 who married Elizabeth Davis and had four children: Thomas 1821, Elizabeth 1831, William 1833, and George 1835, [there may be others] and George Meek baptised 6th May 1801, the son of Joseph Meek and Ann Harris.

Have I made a mistake somewhere, or are they one and the same person?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. You mention that you have some more information that might be helpful to me - yes please!

Sorting out the Meeks is a nightmare!

Meek Family Tree (reply)

Should have added this information earlier to support my research that Joseph (1749 - 1805) is the son of John and Elizabeth.
At Joseph's marriage to Ann Harris (b. 1753)in December 1779, witnesses were: Francis Meek and Joseph Harper.
Now, Ann Harris's mother was Ann (e) Meek (1715 - 1789), who married George Harris (1715 - 1784). I can find no record of Ann(e) Meek's parents, but it is reasonable to assume from her date of birth (1715) that she was a daughter of John Meek and Clare Bridgeman. Ergo, very likely that Francis Meek (1722 - 1787) was Ann(e) Harris's brother and the witness at her wedding.
By coincidence, I had earler researched the Harper family tree, and can confirm that Joseph Harper (1744) was indeed the Parish Clerk. Although this may not seem relevant, Ann Harris's sister, Elizabeth (1754) married John Duberley in 1778. I have also researched the Duberley tree, and find that there are connections between the Harpers and the Duberleys. Therefore it is reasonable that Joseph Harper would be there as a witness as Parish Clerk, and a family friend.
Hope that Kristeen, Jim and David will read this. Thanks again for your interest. Marion.

Meeks Family Tree (reply)

Thank you to all who replied to my queries re: the grandparents of Joseph Meek (1782) and the parents of Joseph Meek (1805). Thank you, Kristeen, your information confirms my earlier research that the grandparents of Joseph (1782) were John (1707) and Elizabeth (1711). My research also shows that his great-grandparents were John (1682) and Clare Bridgeman, and his great-great-grandparents were John (1660) and Elinor.
Incidentally, I can trace the male line of my particular branch to 1964, where the line ends - is this of any help to you?
Also of interest to Jim and David, I think confusion arises because there are too many Josephs in the Meek tree - these are my findings. The sons of John and Clare Bridgeman were:
John (1707) - married Elizabeth and they had a son Joseph 1749.
James (1711) - married Elizabeth Rudge, and they had a son, Joseph, b. 1750.
Francis (1716) - married Rachel Vaughan, and they had a son Joseph, b. 1746
William (1721) - married Alice Pearce, and their son, Joseph was born in 1750.
More confusion when Joseph (1782 - 1866) and Hannah Cook married in 1809, and had a son, Joseph in 1814, but records also showed that Joseph and Hannah had a son Joseph in 1805. - how could this be? I thought. I have but recently learned that the parents of Joseph (1805) were indeed Joseph and Hannah BALDWIN. Mystery solved, except I can find no records for that Joseph (the one who married Hannah Baldwin).
My only interest in Joseph (1805), great grandfather of Joe Meek (1927) is curiosity,as to which of the other Josephs, born between 1746 and 1750 was Joe Meek's ancestor.
I have now completed my own branch of the Meek family tree to my satisfaction.
Thank you once again for your help. Marion.

MEEK family Ruardean and Lee Bailey (reply)

Hi Kristeen

I wouldn't say "Better Judgement" !!

Sometimes you have to go with a "gut" feeling and see if subsequent information proves you were right, but I always prefer to get proof or confirmation. In latter years, this can be a Census find, which sometimes includes parents or in laws or Ideally a certificate and I have just under 1000.

You will see a number of baptisms for Joseph between 1740 & 1750.In this case, the only thing (for me) which points to Joseph Meek who married Ann Harris being the son of Francis Meek and Rachel is that the 1st witness at their wedding was Francis Meek. The second witness Joseph Harper you will find on hundreds of Parish Record entries and he must be a church official.

MEEK family Ruardean and Lee Bailey (reply)

Hi Marion

This could be quite an interesting debate as we are going back into an era where it is difficult to get confirmation of your findings, so I would be interested in the comments of others. I have already noted of course that Kristeen does not agree with me !!
I have the following :
Joseph Meek 1782 was baptised 1st Dec 1782 parents Joseph Meek 1746 & Ann Harris baptised 16 Dec 1753.
Joseph Meek 1746 was baptised 9th Nov 1746 parents Francis Meek 1716 & Rachel Vaughan.
Francis Meek 1716 was baptised 11 Jan 1716 parents John Meek 1682 & Clare Bridgeman.
John Meek 1682 was baptised 16 Feb 1682 parents John Meek born abt. 1660 & Elinor.

The second question :
Joseph Meek 1805 was baptised 12 May 1805 parents Joseph Meek 1771 & Hannah Baldwin. My only interest in this family is that Joseph Meek 1771 & Hannah Baldwin's great granddaughter Gertrude Helen Read married William Ernest Marfell
