Blewett/Blewitt/Bluett -Cornish links? (reply)

I am descended from the Blewitts (mom's side) who lived in Oldbury. Your branch later in the 1800's lived in close proximity to mine, I have been trying to establish/confirm lnks with the Forest of Dean and I believe we originated with John b 1750's and Mary Boseley b 1740's.

Blewett/Blewitt/Bluett -Cornish links? (reply)

Hi Paul
Thanks for your reply. I do have details of your Johannah Blewett but I haven't found a connection with MY Blewetts. My great grandma was Ursula Blewett dob 26th July 1865 born in Dingle Street, Rounds Green, Oldbury. Her father George born 1834 in East Dean. His father was Cornelius Blewett born 1811 died at Longhope in 1864. The reason why I have details of YOUR Johannah is because she had a brother Cornelius born 1794 and I thought there may be a connection with parallel families which I have yet to prove. I have Johannah's parents as George Blewett who married Mary Sparrow, 21st May 1776 at Awre with Blakeney.

Kind regards
Maz

Cornish links? (reply)

Over the last few years in this Forum there have been regular Glos/Corn links.

Tin and Gold mining in Cornwall - Iron and Coal mining in FoD - similar skills so no real surprise that there should be a flow both ways :-)

The Cornish BLEWETTs are said to be derived from the thirteen sons of Francis & Elizabeth BLEWETT of Colan. Colan is a few miles inland from Newquay and the family is known from a memorial in the parish church. The sons were born around 1530-1560 before the start of the parish register so their names are not known. Francis however was the son of Francis BLEWETT of Holcombe Rogus in Devon.

The first occurrence of the name BLEWETT in Cornish parish registers shows that they were indeed originally concentrated in the area around Colan, particularly the triangle bounded by Colan Bodmin and Camelford. Of the Cornish parish registers that have survived from the last quarter of the 16C, the BLEWETT surname occurs in only six parishes, all within the C-B-C triangle.

Here is an example in 1851 who is an Iron Miner ( born 1786 ish ) in South Wales, another area with strong links to the FoD

1851 Llanelly
Edward Blewitt 65 Crone, Cornwall, England Iron Miner
Sarah Blewitt 41
Edwd Blewitt 7
Sarah Blewitt 9

and then an example of FoD to Wales in 1851
1851
Elizabeth Blewitt abt 1773 Little Dean, Gloucestershire, England Wife Monmouth, Monmouthshire

{BLEWITT prior thread http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=11330 }

random snippet

The village was known in the Domesday Book as Hantone, the Blewett part of the name coming from the Bluet family in the fourteenth century.

Doomesday Book (also known as Domesday, or Book of Winchester), was the record of the great survey of England completed in 1086, executed for William the Conqueror, that was similar to a census by a government of today. ...

The name of the village is sometimes spelt as Hinton Blewett.

Blewett/Blewitt/Bluett -Cornish links?

My Blewett ancestors moved from East Dean area to Oldbury, West Midlands between 1851 and 1861. I have traced back to Richard Blewett who died 19 July 1837 and was married to Sarah Hayward. I now live in Cornwall and Blewett is a common name down here and I would like to know if anyone can throw any light on Cornish links to Forest of Dean as I haven't been able to prove any. Did some of the Cornish Blewetts move to Forest of Dean perhaps with mining connections?
