by Jenny White @, Doncaster, Monday, October 17, 2005, 15:51 (6968 days ago)

Does anyone have a connection to/or any information on Jane Hatton born about 1820 possibly East Dean or her parents.

I have Jane Hatton as a potential name for the wife of James Griffiths my ggg grandfather. James GRIFFITHS born abt 1824 Ruardean. From census information provided by Slowhands, The 1851 census shows James and wife Jane living with Sarah HATTON and son James.

1851 census East Dean entry
HATTON Sarah Widow/er 70 Not Known Ruardean
James 27 Coal Miner Ruardean
GRIFFITHS James Married 24 Coal Miner Ruardean
Jane 29 wife Ruardean
James 4 Ruardean
George 1 Ruardean

The 1841 census shows a Jane of the right age living with Sarah Hatton and James.

1841 census HO 107 /365 /10 folio 10
Ruardean Sind Hill (?)
Sarah HATTON Widow/er 60 Y
Jane 20 Ind Y
James 17(?) Collier Y

Can't find anything on IGI.

I have an interest in descendants of James and Susan HATTON as they are my wife's 2xgreat grandparents.

In addition to the children listed in 1851 Census I have one other who is Eliza and she was baptised 25 December 1826. At present I have not located a marriage for Eliza but this family is listed in the 1851 Census:

Piece Folio SchNo Town Surname Forename Relatn Marr Age Occupation County Place

1959 0107 110 Ruardeanhill GRIFFITHS Catherine DA U 4M - GLS East Dean

and this is the 1881 Census entry:

Any additional information gratefully received.

Hi Michael,

I can be a little dim at times, but are you saying that your wifes ancestors James and Sarah HATTON are the parents of Jane HATTON and James HATTON (from the 1841 census in my topic message). The 1841 census shows Sarah as a widow with Jane and James. 1851 census shows Sarah HATTON and son James HATTON living with James and Jane GRIFFITHS and children.

I am trying to establish that the wife of James Griffiths, called Jane is the daughter of Sarah HATTON. Also, if this is the case, who her father and any siblings would be.

Hope you understand all this, just read it through and it sounds a little garbled to me.

Please let me know.

Hello Jenny,

I am afraid I have misled you with my posting. It should have read John and SUSAN Hatton and I have therefore amended it.
Whilst I have a database on various HATTON families of the Lydbrook/Ruardean area I regret I do not have an entry for Jane. Also no entries with a GRIFFITHS connection which is why I responded to Slowhands posting.

My apologies,
Mike

Marriage certificate arrived today.

James Griffiths age 20, son of Giles Griffiths, married Jane Hatton age 24, father not named. They married 3 August 1845 in the Leys Hill Chapel according to the rites of the Baptists by Thomas Wright. Leys Hill Baptist Chapel was in Walford, Herefordshire. They were living at Cinderhill, Ruardean at the time of the wedding. Witnesses were James Hatton and Caroline Loyd.

Leys Hill Baptist Chapel , Walford, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire if you are looking for it .( nr Kerne Bridge)

along with Bishopswood I have seen a few "stray" marriages from Ruardean/Lydbrook area - I have a suspicion the ministers were more "liberal" others - but that is a feeling rather than a well researched conclusion

early relationship of Lydbrook and Leys Hill discussed in

Hi
im just looking at the marriage cert details you have posted.
have you noticed the witness Caroline Lloyd, could sge be Caroline Hatton who married David Lloyd 25 OCT 1843 English Bicknor, Gloucester, England according to IGI. Is she one of your Hattons?

Here is the 1851 census of who I think she is

Caroline Lloyd abt 1823 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Wife Ruardean Gloucestershire
David Lloyd abt 1801 Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales Head Ruardean Gloucestershire
Mary Lloyd abt 1850 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Ruardean Gloucestershire

What do you think- or have you already sussed this?

Hi Jenny, I noticed your posts.
I'm descended from Cornelius Hatton and am the administrator of the Hatton-Hatten DNA Site at FamilyTreeDNA. We're also working with the Huttons [some appear to related]. One lives in Wales, another Yorkshire etc. So far about 45 male test have been completed and the vast majority are Celtic. Very few are closely related. Some with other surnames that are close, or defined as distantly related, pre-surname, are Moore [close], Bullock, Nichols, Johnstone/Johnson, Cooper, Bolin/Bolyn, Rich, Williams, Williamson, Jones and many Scot-Irish.
