Hello Graham:
As a Bradley researcher descended from George Bradley and Elizabeth Lewis I am interested in your question. While I don't yet know the answer I have brought it to the attention of a few other Bradley researchers.
I am descended from GB and EL through Willam. Are you also a descendant? Let's share information.
Cheers

I haven't worked forward to Kate but James Bradley and Elizabeth Harris married 24 October 1811 in Walford were my 3x great grandparents. I'm descended from their eldest son George aged 14, already working away from home by 1841 census on a nearby farm, moved to Swansea where he married Julia Ann Gayton from North Devon. James and Elizabeth were listed as porters at Coughton in some records.

Elizabeth was born in Holm Green, Ross on Wye daughter of James and Hannah Harris. James said he was born in Ruardean in the census returns but I haven't been able to find a matching baptism or any clues as to his parents.

It's been 12 years :), did you find anything else on George Bradley? I'm researching the history of the Fountain Inn, Parkend, and came across someone of this name who was running the pub (on behalf of Redbrook Brewery) in 1878.

George Bradley linked to Fountain Inn Parkend ?

Hi Alan,
Doesn't look like George was at the Fountain for very long, so may have been a "temporary" landlord supplied by the Brewery, perhaps in-between them appointing a more permanent landlord ?. This prior thread lists other landlords around his time, obtained from Census data, old newspapers, etc;

I found this application for bankruptcy (left column, half way down). At the time the Fountain was owned by Redbrook Brewery, so George would have been a tenant landlord.

Fair enough.

Apart from having the name, do you have any other reasons to believe the George Bradley you know at the Fountain is linked to this thread's George Bradley of Ruardean.

Thanks.

BTW, this old thread also mentions the Fountain, do you know Alan Powell ?
aka "Fountain Inn", may be worth contacting by direct mail ?

George Bradley linked to Fountain Inn Parkend ?

by obscurasky @, Saturday, May 06, 2017, 22:10 (2768 days ago) @ Jefff

Hello Jeff. It hadn't occurred to me that my name isn't shown - I am Alan Powell. My wife and I wrote a history of our pub in 2015, to mark our 25 years as publicans here. It was rather 'encyclopaedic' - largely a list of bullet points, so I'm revisiting, and rewriting, it in a more interesting format.

The 1878 reference to George Bradley in the London Gazette is all I have on him I'm afraid. We know that John Ellsmore was the publican here until 1876 and that Richard and Elizabeth (Martha) Scott were publicans from at least 1881.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan, thanks for explaining. I did think you might be one & the same, but as your "old" Fountain Inn username is still active/live (it displays as a blue hyperlink, not black), then I guessed not; ah well no matter.

Did you find George on the Gazette's website ?. If so I'm impressed, I usually struggle with it, it's ECR computer seems to struggle to recognise the names I search for, sometimes have to rely on Google doing it instead !. But big thanks for the tip, never thought to look-up landlords on it, I've a fair few in my trees so that's worth following-up, thanks.

Funny really, I spent a hour last night trying to link your Bradley landlord with one of mine, aka the landlord of the Farmer's Boy in Longhope c1940, as his dad was before him.
Took me ages to eventually realise I had my memory-wires crossed, and the pub landlord was in fact Sidney COMPTON, as was his father George, whereas Jack BRADLEY was the local butcher c1950 and son of Fred and also butcher before him..., and not a landlord at all, duh... It amused me to find that Sidney Compton's brother was a long way from being a pub landlord, as in 1911 he was Dean or similar at Chester Cathedral.

I expect like us you've tried searching this site's BMDs for George, and the Census' too, and similarly found no obvious tie-ins ? I therefore suspect the ever-reliable MPG may well be correct with her suggestion, and that George wasn't a local Parkend resident unlike so many landlords in those times, but a "placement" by the brewery, hence my thinking he was a "temporary" one.

Good luck with your researches, I'll have to look-up your book. I did look-up the Fountain in Heather Hurley's RFoD Pubs book, but nothing new there. Shame her book doesn't have an index of the many & various landlords names it contains, maybe that's a project for me after I finish doing my planned catalogue of all the people named in the otherwise excellent Humphrey Phelps FoD old photo books. Unfortunately my books are boxed-up awaiting our moving-house, otherwise I'd have a look for the Fountain.

They were. Richard and Elizabeth (Martha) Scott's daughter, Margaret, married George Gunter in 1887 and they took over management of the Fountain Inn soon after (initially still on behalf of Redbrook Brewery). And when they died.... two of their daughters took it on as well.
