Farr - English Bicknor, Joyford. (General)

by Louise Morgan @, Thursday, January 19, 2006, 18:38 (6874 days ago)

My grandmother was a Farr, her family came from the Forest and childhood visits were made to relatives in Joyford. My great grandfather was William Henry/Henry William Farr born c1878, and according to family in English Bicknor. I have looked at 1901, 1881 and bmd from 1870+ but I'm still unable to find out which William or Henry Farr is mine. The most likely candidate is Henry Farr born in Bicknor 1878 but by 1901 he has disappeared. My William/Henry Farr ended up in Cardiff and had 10 children there from 1902 to 1915. His wife was Ellen Horne (?) Despite a lot of searching I can't find a marriage record for them. I believe William/Henry and Ellen may have been related.
If anyone has any Farr information I would much appreciate it. I have 1881 and 1901 census on all the Farrs in the Forest but have still not been able to find which Farrs are my relatives.
Thank you very much.

There is a possibility that I have or may know of a connection. It would help if you could let us know if you have any birth certificates for the children born 1902 - 1915 as this will give us parents names including mother's maiden name. From there we may be able to trace a marriage.

We await further news.

Farr - Gwilliam

by Louise Morgan @, Friday, January 20, 2006, 01:35 (6873 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you for your replies. I'll tell you what I've got, fact and hearsay!
On her birth certificate in 1910 my Grandmother's parents are William Henry Farr and Ellen Farr, formerly Horne. However my Grandmother told me that her parents were known as Henry William Farr and Helen Horne.
William's death cert. Cardiff 1940 gives his name as William Farr and age 62.
We believe that Ellen's date of birth was Jan 19th 1878 or 9.
I believe that William and Ellen had at least 10 children. I have birth certs for 3 of them that all give same names for parents. The children from 1904 onwards were born in Cardiff, the first son William was born c1901/2 and there are several possibles on free BMD.
I have found the family in a Cardiff street directory 1905 but nothing in 1901 census for either William or Ellen.
We have always believed that William was born in English Bicknor. I have found a William born Bicknor in 1901 census but he is a little too young and working on a farm near Ross which doesn't quite fit. There is also a Farr family from Bicknor in 1881 with a son Henry born 1878, sounds more promising but no trace of him by 1901.
We certainly had relatives in Joyford but they may have been by marriage. One of my grandmothers sisters married a cousin, who was a Wilks. Nobody knows how they were related. I think the Joyford relatives may have been Wilks not Farr.
As far as the hearsay goes there was talk that William and Ellen were also related. Also talk of links to a travelling family. Any further info would be fantastic. Thanks very much.
Louise

Thank you so much for all that information. The earliest census return took me back to the IGI and I am beginning to find the link between the Forest of Dean Farrs and the Clodock Farrs which is fantastic as it provides me with lots more to look at. I will keep trying to pin down my elusive William/Henry Farr. I am nearly convinced that he is the Henry Farr born to James and Mary 1878. I will send for his birth certificate which may provide a clue.
Best wishes
Louise

That is all really fascinating, thank you so much. I will order the birth cert for Ellen Mattravers and find out her date of birth, if it's Jan 19th I'm in business.. All these families are so entwined. I think I need to hire a cottage in the Forest for a few days and try to unpick it all. I've been pouring over the 1901 trying to find William/Henry Farr, misspellings etc but no joy yet.
I'm wondering how I can find out exactly where Walnut Tree Cottage in Joyford was/is. The cottage my mother remembers visiting in the 1950s was at the bottom of Joyford Hill near the water spout.
Thank you again, I'd got really stuck on this but now I'm completely re-enthused.

Walnut Tree Cottage in Joyford

based on the "walk" of the census data, its in the region of Joyford Farm / Corn Mill / Britannia Inn (aka Dog and Muffler) going up the hill to the Lonk. < so could be the one you remember>

It is not marked on the map ( as far as I can tell), however this is the area of your interest

The Wilks you listed are all from my lineage.

Alfred Wilks abt 1870 Newland, Gloucestershire, England Son Whitchurch is my Great Grandfather.

George Wilks abt 1833 Doward, Herefordshire, England Head Ruardean is my 2nd Great Grandfather.

Thomas Wilks abt 1810 Bisley, Gloucestershire, England Head Whitchurch Herefordshire is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

Although unfortunatley I cant seem to go back beyond Thomas at the moment (and I too will be looking at a holiday in Ross this year), I am more than happy to share anything I do have if it helps.

Nigel.

The parents married in 1804 and a sister Sarah chr. 28/7/1805

May be worth further investigation - 3 miles east of Stroud

My grandparents were William and Helen Farr, nee Horne, of Cardiff, perhaps the same Farrs' you are researching. I also had an aunt who married a Wilks. My family story is complex. If you would like to know just how complex let me know.
