Courteen family of Dixton / Redbrook (General)

Just seeing if there is anyone out there who is looking into this family. I have them back to a Henry COURTEEN who married Sarah HUGHES on 15/5/1785 in Dixton. He may be the same Henry who was baptised in Croydon (according to the IGI) in 1746 but I can't prove the link.

They married into the 'Industrial' TEAGUE family (see the book by Ralph Anstis)

Do you know if this is the same Henry Courteen who ran the British Lion in Parkend?

The only association I can find of a Henry COURTEEN with the British Lion, Parkend, is in the Gloucestershire Chronicle, Saturday 21 January 1854. He was giving evidence to the inquest on Henry JONES, blacksmith, who had been murdered some ten days before (by a man who was also called Henry JONES) and identified himself and the inn. I imagine this is him with a birth date of c1817.

GR 1851 Census, West Dean, Parkend
Henry COURTEEN, Head, Mar, 34, Publican, born West Dean, Gloucestershire.
Elizabeth BARNS, Serv, Un, 18, Newland, Gloucestershire

From this site this is a candidate,

There are other glimpses of him in the 1850s papers when he is hosting Pigeon Matches at the British Lion. He was made bankrupt in 1858 but then moved on to the White Hart at Cinderford.

GR 1861 Census, White Hart, Cinderford
Henry COURTEEN, Head, Mar, 44, Inn Keeper, born Gloster, Newland
Eliza, Wife, Mar, 35, Monmouth
Arthur, Son, 16, Gloster, West Dean

Kate, Daur, 4, Gloster, West Dean
Clara. Daur, 2, Gloster, West Dean

Clearly he wasn’t the same Henry as in the first post but I can’t imagine he wasn’t related.

As Henry COURTEEN married Sarah HUGHES (Widow) by Licence - do you have a copy of this, which may give extra info. His Son, Henry - also married by Licence - and his information is on this website.

Have you used the advance search to check for witnesses ?
