Just reading your message about the Thomas family and noticed that your maiden name was Selby. I am researching the Selby family of Hewelsfield and surrounds. Can you let me know if you are related to them.
Thanks

SELBY / DARBY Hewlesfield thread
Please can someone help me. I am researching the Selby family of Hewelsfield which I have done as far as I can go at the moment. I have now started on the Darbys. There are Darbys on two sides of my husband's family. Firstly Jane Darby married to John Selby (1795); secondly Margaret Darby (c 1840), husband Charles William Hill, who was my husband's great grandmother (mother of Margaret Harriet Hill who was married to George Selby, gggrandson of John). I believe Margaret Darby was a daughter of Peter Darby (c 1801) and Margaret Lewis and sister of Manoah Darby - gravestone in Hewelsfield churchyard. What I really want to find is the connection, if any, between Jane Darby and Peter Darby. The Parish Records at the moment do not go back far enough to find their parents - is there somewhere else I could look? There are about 8 lots of parents in the baptisms (late 1700s-early 1800s) who could be brothers and sisters but the marriages do not state the parents which is very frustrating. Jane's parents were James Darby and Rachel Lewis and Peter's parents were Peter and Elizabeth (both surnames Darby on the marriage certificate - so who was Elizabeth?). Maybe James and Peter were brothers. I would be most grateful for any help you can give me.

SELBY / DARBY Hewlesfield thread
Hi Terry
Nice to hear from you. I am in frequent contact with Vicki San Andres in Australia re Meshach Selby and Martha James. She has sent me a whole family history plus loads of photos. I presume you are in contact with her too. If you have any other photos/information, I would be pleased to receive them. How are you related to Martha and do you still live in the Forest? If you know of any other Selbys still living in the Forest I would love to know who they are. My husband's cousin still lives there, in Lydbrook, but I don't think there are any Selbys in Hewelsfield. Meshach's brother, John, lived in Ellwood/Clearwell and I wonder if there are any of his descendents still living there as I found a couple of fairly recent Selby marriages in the Birth/Death/Marriage Index.

Margaret DARBY 1838 Hewlesfield
Slowhands, thanks for the information. I had got most of it but have no access to the 1851 census so that was helpful. Your 1841 version throws up slightly different spellings of names to the one I have but this may be helpful in finding the right names of the children on the parish records. I believe the "Mundiah" on the 1851 should be "Manoah". Sheila

Thanks for that but nothing to be found there. Can you tell me if there are Parish Records still to be transcribed earlier in the 1700s than already done? This is where I may find what I am looking for. Sheila

My g.g.aunt Ellen Ward married Manoah Darby, hence my interest in the DARBY family.
I believe there are still SELBY's living in our area (Forest of Dean). Going back a while back Joe Selby ran Bream Post Office.
Maybe you you will find something of interest below.

Just browsing the Forest of Dean website. We are also researching the Selby family and are descended from Enoch son of Shadrack. Which line is your ancestor?

How lovely to see someone enquiring about the Selbys. My husband is the great grandson of Enoch, son of Shadrach. His grandfather was George Selby. I have done a very full history of the Selby family which I can share with you. Let me know who your grandparents/parents are. If you want to write to me c/o my e-mail address I can send you lots of information.

Paul Selby son of Meshach Selby/Martha James
To anyone interested in these families. Meshack and Martha Selby with their children, Paul and Mercy, went to Australia in 1855. I was originally told that Paul was murdered but no details were available. However, I have now found the following on the internet which shows it was an accidental death.
Sydney Morning Herald, Friday, 13 Nov 1868

are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of his late departed Son PAUL ; to move from his residence Wymes-street, Stanmore, THIS (Friday) AFTERNOON, at 3 o'clock. W. CURTIS, Undertaker, Newtown.

Thomas Families of Oldcroft /Yorkley/ Viney Hill
Hello - I am looking for another Thomas family from Oldcroft. That of Benjamin and Mary Ann Thomas. They lived close by the family you are researching according to Ancestry. Its possible that Benjamin had at least one brother. Of particular interest iw the whereabouts of a daughter Eva in 1901. Should anyone be able to help I would be most grateful as she was my great grandmother.

Hello Chris,
If this is the right Eva I think you may be correct about the name she used at marriage to Richard SAUNDERS. Here she is in a later census,
GR 1881 Census, West dean, Old Croft
Benjamin THOMAS, Head, Mar, 57, Coal Miner, b. Gloshire, West Dean

This seems to be her illegitimate daughter, Annie (Mary Ann),

BNA Gloucestershire Chronicle - Saturday 14 May 1892
COLEFORD PETTY SESSIONS May 13
Eva Saunders summoned Richard Saunders, her husband, a collier, for assaulting her on the 26th September last year. The parties, who looked very young, had been married about two years, and there was one child four years old. The defendant had assaulted his wife, and then deserted her. He had been working in Cardiff. On being fined 20s. and ordered to pay 27s. costs, defendant said he would rather go to gaol. He was accommodated with one month’s hard labour.
This looks like Richard back with his family in 1901,

Selina HOWELL, Granddaur, 10, Oldcroft, Glos. Cripple from (Birth?)
Fred SAUNDERS, Grandson, 13, Oldcroft, Glos.
Despite the anomalous age and marital status this must be Richard SAUNDERS. The family matches previous census entries for him. Deceased father’s name was George as per marriage record.
But where is Eva?
