Evans at Hausley (General)
EVANS at Hawsley/Hausley/Horse lea
I am researching my ancestors in Hausley, which I have seen
spelt differently at different times as Horsley, Hawsley,
Hausley and Horse lea. It is up the hill from Joys Green,
near Lydbrook. Does anyone know the history of this area?
My gg grandparents were William EVANS b. 1841 (est)
Bicknor, West Dean, Collier
and Mary EVANS b 1848 (est) East Dean.
Children were
William John Evans b. 1872
Charles James Evans b.1874 (my g-grandad)
Millicent M Evans b. 1876
Morgan Sidney Evans b.1879
Lewis Evans b. 1883
Frank Evans b. 1885
Joyce Evans b. 1892
I don't know their marriage date or place, but their first
child (that I know of) was born in 1872.
I have them on the 1881 and 1891 census living 4 entries
away from the Masons Arms, Hausley. On the 1871 there are two families (called Evance) who could be them, with almost exactly the same ages, names and places of birth, living next door-but-one to each other - I wondered if the enumerator could have enumerated them twice?
Does anyone have any information about the Mason's Arms? Family
legend says that our family owned a warehouse behind it at
one time.
A younger son of the family, Morgan Sydney EVANS b. 1879
was said in the family to have been Headmaster of Cinderford
Grammar school. Does anyone have access to the records to
check this?
My Great Uncle, Charles Gough, told me that he had visited family there up to few years ago,who were living at Pludds Farm. I think they were relatives of Joyce Evans. Does anyone know of this farm or this family?
William John Evans and Charles James Evans moved to Kinsley in Yorkshire and settled there.
If anyone can give me any of the above information or any
other about the area and life at the time I would be very
grateful.
Thankyou
Janet Ford (nee Evans)
