Thomas Wintle and the Colesworthys and Vimpanis (General)

For those searching the Wintles I found some interesting links between Thomas Wintle and the Colesworthys and Vimpanis. Please bear with me, this is going to take some explaining.

In the 1851 census I found Sarah Bruce Colesworthy (Sarah is the key to this link-up) living with Thomas (64) and Jane Wintle (79) in Swainswick as their niece (19). I knew Sarah B Colesworthy was the daughter of Mary J Colesworthy nee Ames and in later census she is living with her step father Edmund Vimpany, son of Edmund Vimpany and Susannah nee Wintle at Jersey Villa in Bristol. Sarah was in fact born in 1832, and her mother had remarried to Edmund Vimpany ( Feb 1841) however I cannot find Edmund and Mary in 1851 census.

This gave a clue possibly to Thomas’s wife’s family and at this point Sue came up with the answers. I looked for Thomas Wintle's marriage to Jane and yes, she was Jane Colesworthy and they were married on 27th July 1814 in Honiton Devon. Her birth date was estimated at 1793 but I did a quick check on the Colesworthys and found a Jane born in 1771 which fits in better with the age on the census. She was daughter of John and Joan Colesworthy who had a huge family.
I counted at least 12 siblings, not all survived infancy, in fact she was the second Jane born to them. Her brother, Henry, was born in 1785 and married Mary in 1829, when Mary was only about 18. Sarah was born in 1832.

I also sent my thoughts to Bri who had thought that Thomas later married Sarah Colesworthy. Sue was able to provide the answer here too - found another marriage for a Thomas Wintle (there are many) on 16 March 1856 to Sarah Taylor Pratt. By this time Thomas would be nearly 70 and hardly have time to marry again. He certainly did not marry Sarah Bruce Colesworthy - she died a spinster in 1919.

Thomas and Sarah can be found in census 1861.
