John SELBY and Jane DARBY (General)
by Vicki San Andres , Australia, Monday, July 17, 2006, 17:27 (6696 days ago)
Hi,
I am looking for info on my great great great grandparents.
John SELBY and Jane DARBY.
John SELBY was born in abt 1780 in Wales UK. He married Jane DARBY.
I am not sure of her birth etc, or their marraige date. John Died in Glebe, NSW, Australia on the 24 Aug 1890. I am not sure if he was a convict or free settler, or wheather he came out before his son Meshack or not.
I have one of John and Jane's children so far.
His name was Meshack SELBY born on the 9 Jan 1822 in Oakwoodhill, Forest of Dean. He married Martha JAMES in May 1848 at the church of ST Paul in Park End, Forest Of Dean. His occupation was a stone Mason.
He migrated to Australia with his wife and 2 eldest children Martha and Paul arriving in Australia on the 15 Aug 1855 on board the ship "Startled Fawn"
He died on the 7 Aug 1880 in Stanmore, NSW, Australia.
Any help on John SELBY or Jane DARBY would be greatly appriciated.
Regards Vicki

Re James Lewis married Rachel Hoskin 1768,
Woolaston
Rachel was alive until 30/04/1836,when she died in Woolaston aged 87 years.
She and James Lewis had several children , the last two being: -
Walter (born 1788)
and
Benjamin (born 1791)
She and James Lewis are my GGG grandparents, through a further son, Joseph(b 1783)
I have a copy of her will, dated 1832 and executed after her death in 1836.
Her name is still given as Rachel Lewis at this time, suggesting she did not remarry.
The only beneficiaries of the will are four of her surviving Lewis sons.
In view of the dates of birth of the youngest sons, and the above info from the will and death registers, it seems unlikely - despite the coincidence of both the name and the presence of an Edmund Hoskin as a witness at the later marriage - that she is therefore the same Rachel Lewis who married James Derby in 1787.
Hope this helps your research

Hi Tony
Sorry got a bit mixed up ,with uncle Tommy wrong side of the family.
I saw auntie joan in tesco's a few months ago she doesn't change a bit.
Mammy tells me you have been researching the selby tree,as I have!!We took her up to Hewersfield last summmer and had a look around the graveyard ! It's such a pretty little hamlet, what a lovely life our ancestors had must have growing up there !!
Do you still live in Ton? I live near Aberaeron in West Wales .
I have really enjoyed researching the family tree, and what a family ,I am in regular contact with Vicky in Australia.
I would love to hear from you again ,so that I can report back to my mother.
Take care

The last Selby to live in Hewelsfield was Ruth Selby Brookes who died in 2004 after moving to Lydney. One of her daughters lives in Lydbrook. Ruth was the daughter of George Maurice Selby who built the Mackenzie Hall in Brockweir. She was my husband's aunt - George was his grandfather.
Carol does know there are no "doors to knock on" there as I have sent her a pretty comprehensive Selby family history although next time in Lydbrook I will be looking in the telephone directory for any Selbys in Bream and Sling. No doubt they are descendents of John Selby (1830)as it was his family that moved to the Ellwood area of the Forest. John was the brother of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Shadrach stayed in the Hewelsfield area, Meshach went to Australia and Abednego was a shipwright in Portsea and South Wales.

Hello
I've just picked up this thread by chance and I thought I'd throw some info in.
I'm David Selby, son of Peter Selby, son of Joseph Shadrach Selby, who is son of Shadrach Selby which is referred to here, brothers with Meshack and Abendigo. I always remember their names because they are amazing.
As far as I am aware we were the last of the Selbys in the area, my Gran, Dorothy, moved away about 10/15 years ago and had now passed away (6 years ago).
Of course I could be wrong!
Always good to hear from more Selbys out there, sounds like there's a few cousins out there!
When I say area I mean Lydney/Bream/Clearwell/St Briavels.. Not Wales.
I just found out I'm part Welsh.
Dave

My Dad's cousin Linda and her husband Dave live in Bream still, they're not Selby's by name.
This Selby could be an unknown relation!
