I am late on this but the Richard Smith 1822 that was quoted in the thread in 1841 and 1851 is not the 1861 Richard as he and Susan are on the 1861 Berry Hill Bridewell with Eliza 35 and George 28.

Richard SMITH Berry Hill in 1861

by vcatkinson @, Wednesday, July 09, 2008, 02:19 (5973 days ago) @ slowhands

Sorry, maybe I was getting confused with all those lists! Yes Richard 1822 Married his cousin Mary Smith in 1852, he was the son of Richard 1793 whose father Edward is my 4xgt grandfather.

I cannot find his first marriage though.

Hannah is the daughter of Richard's brother EDWARD who married AMELIA GWILLIAM 1843 and Hannah was bapt 1857. She is not with Richard and Mary 1881 but next door with her mother who had remarried to GEORGE WILLIAMS hence the stepdaughter relationship!

it would not be fun unless these confusions crept in from time to time :-)

i.e. someone who moves from son - grandson and back to son over 3 censuses !

Yes! One of 'my' Smiths quoted herself as Widow on 1851 but husband was back in later census'! I have searched for her marrying someone of the same name and age but no go, we can only assume they had a falling out!

Edward Smith & Amelia Gwilliam's son, Benjamin b1851, is my 2xgreatgrandfather. Benjamin married Ruth Brown in 1875. In 1876 their son Benjamin was born in Joyford (that was how he described his birthplace on his marriage cert). Ruth already had a son Frank when she married. In 1899 Frank & Benjamin emigrated to Australia and a younger brother Amos joined them a few years later.`

I would like to learn more about the Smith & Gwilliam families.

Richard SMITH Berry Hill in 1861

by vcatkinson @, Friday, July 18, 2008, 01:09 (5964 days ago) @ joyford

Richard is the grandson of my 4x gt grandfather Edward Smith bap 17.6.1753 Newland, I have the line as this (if in brackets its not yet proved)

(John & Sarah Jones marr 2.2.1725 Newland) OR (John & Sarah Ellway marr 1.4.1725 Newland)
|
James c1726 marr Susan/Susanna
|
Edward bapt 17.6.1753 Newland Marr Mary Elly 17.2.1776 Newland lived Berry Hill & James 1760
|
Richard bap 14.7.1793 marr Susan - they have a confusing M.I. at Christchurch & John (my 3x) 1779 Edward 1782 Mary 1788 Thomas 1790
|
Edward marr Amelia Gwilliam 1837& 1819 Richard 1822 Eliza 1825 Amos 1827 H/Elms 1830 George 1832 Benjamin 1835 Isabella 1837

I have also done the Elly and Ellway lines.

My grandfather Thomas David Smith 1886-1967 was born the youngest of at least 10 in Yorkley of Levi (known as 'Billy Playfair') and Sarah (Davis) Smith, all his brothers died quite young - this seems to be a trend in this family - and 2 of his sisters lived to over 100.

Grandfather's brothers played rugby, one was known as the 'formidable' Albert Smith and Arthur was called the greatest forward in England (see 'Forest Rugby Review'). His brother Timothy was a Police Detective in Long Island New York and died in tragic circumstances. One of the family was reputed to have gone to Newfoundland but I cannot verify that yet.

Two of his Uncles, Timothy and Amos, each kept shops, Timothy in Coleford and Amos in Coalway Lane End. Another Uncle (Levi) kept the Stag Inn for a short while before he died aged 33 in 1903.
