From the Gloucester Journal 27 June 1916

No Place Like Home

In answer to a letter written at Blakeney Council School, and which was enclosed with a consignment of vegetables to the Fleet, Winnie VIRGO has received an interesting reply from J.G GOULDING, a seaman torpedo man on board a battleship. The writer in acknowledging the receipt of the vegetables, says:

"They were very acceptable indeed, coming as they did directly after our big battle in the North Sea. I am pleased to say that this ship did her little bit in the action. I beleive myself that we sank two German warships and one submarine, and brought down one Zeppelin, so I don't consider that we did very badly. No doubt you will be suprised to hear that I am a native of of Blakeney, and the school you go to now was my old school. Mr. Evan JONES was my schoolmaster. I can just picture Blakeney as it is now, and I say, although I have been almost all over the world, that Blakeney is one of the prettiest places I have ever seen"

In conclusion the writer thanks the master, teachers and scholars of Blakeney Council School for their efforts on behalf of the sailors of the Grand Fleet

I’ve just got one photo copy page of my Great Grandad’s work diary. My x Cousin has all the originals. He was William Wickenden and he lived at Nibley Mill, Blakeney, one time a butcher, Innkeeper, but bred Shire Horses and used them for all sorts of uses, including helping take stone etc. to lay roads. Mentions, to Bullo Haulin Granite. Rabbiting with Mr O Jenner. Killed 28. The family photos are on this website.

I can see an Oliver Jenner buried at Awre 1932 in the records.

It closed in the late 1980's

looking on Google maps it appears that the old Chapel is / was being renovated

The burial ground was I believe adjacent however it looks like this too is part of the renovation

Blakeney Tabernacle at Brains Green was held in trust by the trustees of the Hackney Theological Seminary, known as the "Village Itinerancy". The Tabernacle was opened "for the public worship of God" in 1823 when services were preached by the former curate of Trinity Church, Forest of Dean, who had "transgressed the bounds of discipline" and was no longer united "with any body of Christians". In December 1825 "a church was formed there of the Independent or Congregational Order" and was subsequently admitted to the Gloucestershire association of Independent Churches. In 1848 the Tabernacle was re-built and the new building was opened for worship again in 1849.

In 1972 Blakeney Congregational Church became part of the United Reformed Church after joining the National Union of Churches. It remained technically a United Reformed Church until its closure in September 1987, despite wishing to become an independent congregation following a dispute in 1975.

Its hard to say

I have seen repurposed chapels where the gravestones are left in situ, and access is allowed

others where the gravestones were removed ( sometimes to the boundary wall, others completely removed.)

I havent visited this chapel, but have driven by many times

example:-

The sale will be subject to the provisions of the Disused Burial Grounds (Amendment) Act 1981. This means that it will then be the responsibility of the buyer to maintain the burial ground and to ensure that all legal requirements are complied with. This includes making facilities available for family members and others to visit the burial ground, usually on prior notice. The purchaser should be bound by covenant to allow access to the public on notice.

When the burial ground is being sold the sale will often be the subject of numerous specific covenants or premises both positive and negative binding on the new owner to try and ensure that people are still able to visit the graves, that the grounds are maintained, and the legal framework in the Disused Burial Grounds (Amendment) Act 1981 is followed and memorials are not wilfully and inappropriately damaged.

Building work can, however, be undertaken if a disused burial ground is acquired by a Local Authority and planning permission has been granted for the development. It is not necessary for the development to be used by the Local Authority.

Building work can also be undertaken on a disused burial ground if the procedures set out in the Disused Burial Grounds (Amendment) Act 1981 are followed. This involves notices and advertisements similar to that described above in connection with moving headstones. The Department for Constitutional Affairs and Commonwealth War Graves Commission should be informed of plans at an early stage.

Burial grounds can only be developed for purposes other than a church extension where the burial ground has never been used for human burials or where no relative or personal representative of the deceased buried on the grounds objects to the development.

Where building work that will disturb human remains is to be carried out, all remains MUST be exhumed and re-interred, whether or not relatives have come forward. The church must pay for this and the process is expensive.

The church or any owner of the burial ground cannot begin to erect any building on the burial ground until the human remains have been removed and the headstones and memorials removed in accordance with the necessary procedures described below, please see the section on Removing Human Remains.

The multi-initialled Virgo family from Blakeney Hill/Furnace Bottom/Gibralter are part of my lot. I have a good deal on them on a GED on a computer that is not currently functioning, BUT, I suspect I have some hard copies of at least some of the info in my research box. I'll mount an archeological dig over the weekend and see which Virgo's come to light.
