Wow, Slowhands, Michael, thank you for such speedy replies! That's a lot of TIPPINS all together - and I see that most of the men were Engine Drivers, at a colliery I suppose rather than on the railways. Now if only I could link 'my' Ann in with them, that would be perfect!

I've looked again at the 1851 census entry that Slowhands quoted - I had read Ann's age as 34, putting her birth around 1817, but I can see how it could also be read as 54, putting it around 1797. Hmm... another possibility! If only I could find her on another census, it might give another clue. The only possibility I found on the 1841 census, though, was the following, which gives a birth year of 1809:

1841 Wales. Maesteg [?] GLA HO107/1422/15/14 p20
Ann MORTIMORE. 32. N
Jno. MORTIMORE. 5. N
James MORTIMORE. 2. N
.
No sign of William, though...

When I looked at the IGI, I found the following possibilities:

Ann TIPPINS d. William/Sarah. Ruardean, 20 July 1800
Hanah [sic] TIPPINS d. William/Sarah. Ruardean, 8 Dec 1805

Lots to think about, so thank you again!
Kirsty
