The Pludds Village Hall exhibition (General)

by bertha, Sunday, October 08, 2006, 10:34 (6613 days ago)

On October 7th and 8th an exhibition was held at The Pludds Village Hall, which traced the history of The Pludds up to the present day. Apparently there were photos, recollections and cuttings.
I found out about the exhibition too late to go there, so wondered if anyone knew the organiser Mrs Jean Cammell, as I would be interested in knowing more about The Pludds and looking at the photos she had for the exhibition.
The information about the exhibition was in 'The Review' week ending 6th October

Thanks
Bertha

Not in FOD Tourism pages :-

It makes you wonder where it was advertised ! I'm perhaps 12 miles out of the the circulation area for "The Review" so apparently didn't stand a chance of finding out. We could have staged an Informal User Group meeting :-)

Hello Bertha and Slowhands.

I was made aware of this "exhibition" when we visited the Dean Heritage Centre back in the summer, it was not advertised and it was only because I was enquiring about The Pludds that somebody mentioned it. I was going to be on holiday at the time and because the information was so limited I did nothing about it.

I would love to attend such an event and would very happily volunteer to do a stint if we had a "User Group"!! I would get to meet you both. And I might just find out more about the elusive Vaughans/Vauns/Vaughns.

Barbara.

Following on from this, I wrote to The Review asking if my letter could be forwarded onto Mrs Cammell about the exhibition, and then heard nothing.
On 27th May (7 months afer I wrote) Mrs Cammell has contacted me. She put my letter somewhere 'safe' and couldn't find it for 7 months!
She's told me that on the 9th June from 10-30 until 4-30 there will be an Open Garden Scheme running from the Pludds Village Hall. Although there won't be any photos or information at the Hall regarding the Exhibition of last year, Mrs Cammell has said there should be residents from the Pludds attending the Garden Scheme, who she's sure would be happy to give any information they can about The Pludds, and she should also be on hand herself.
There will also be a Heritage Walk on 14th July starting from the Pludds Village Hall, which may be of interest to Researchers as the walk may pass places that their ancestors lived/worked in.
Mrs Cammell has kindly said that if anyone wants to contact her she will be happy to give more information about the above.
If anyone would like her contact details, they can email me using the email link, and I will forward her details onto them.

Bertha

I hope you take your own camera and snap as many pictures as you can of how The Pludds looks today. We could then have our very own exhibition of The Pludds here on the website.

Bertha, your experience is exactly the same as mine both near here at Uffington and at The Dean Heritage Centre. At the latter, I mentioned to staff that my family lived in there between 1840 and 1870. I expected the doors to be locked and not to be freed until they had extracted every last shred of information. Not a bit of it, they were entirely underwhelmed.

Same thing near here at Uffington. My grandmother was born there in 1878. Interesting family with many connections. Up to 25 years ago, most of the inhabitants were my family. Contacted them recently for second time without even the courtesy of a reply.

The LOCAL HISTORY FAIR AT THE SPEECH HOUSE

The Forest of Dean Branch of the Gloucestershire Family History Society are attending this event with display boards, research material etc. and some experienced members on hand if you need some help.

They will again be distributing leaflets to visitors for "finding your family history" which include a prominent reference to this website.

The History Fair is organised by the Forest of Dean Local History Society which is a seperate organisation to the Gloucestershire Family History Society. Their interest is more to do with with buildings and such, rather than genealogy.

The Forest Branch of the G.F.H.Society is also at the Gwent Family History Fair, County Hall Cwmbran on the Saturday, June 9th.

Sadly, I am unable to attend either event this year.

The context /environment in which our ancestors lived is of great interest (to me) as well :-), ifn fact often greater interest...
