I just wondered if anyone can help me find information concerning the death of Private Alfred Hitt 48047. He was from Cinderford but for some reason enlisted with the 4th Bt, Worcestershire Regiment. He died 27th Sept 1917. I have been on the Commonwealth War Graves site but want to find out more about the Worcestershire Regiment and why he did not join the Gloucestershire one.

I have a feeling the answer is almost too simple - in the early part of the Great War the Foresters formed a Gloucestershire Battalion - 13th - - recruited by Harry Webb MP. The War Office sent Harry Webb back to the Forest in the later stages of the war to raise members for the Worcestershire Regiment.
