Finding wife of John WILLETTS (General)

by brenton @, New Zealand, Wednesday, February 25, 2015, 00:52 (3571 days ago)

Hi I am a newbie my great grandfather George WILLETTS (B 5 April 1850) emigrated to New Zealand with his wife Sarah (nee LEWIN) in 1873. His father John Willetts from Blakeney Hill married Ann? and they had three children, Charles 1934, Joseph 1835, Richard 1835.Charles may have died in infancy. John then married Sarah James in 1835.
I cannot find any marriage or death deaths for Ann except for the christening records. The two sons appear on the census returns for John and Sarah so I must have the right family. Can anyone help me. Brent

Hi Brent, welcome to the forum !
Must be quick I'm afraid as was about to shut down for the night, very late now in UK.
I see you've been on the site for a few years, and at first glance looks like you've followed the right trail from the PRs etc, I too cannot see a marriage to Ann, but early days yet.

Meanwhile, have you seen this related old thread, found from searching this forum. It doesn't answer your question but hopefully helps confirm your work so far, and includes the Marriage PR for John & Sarah.
www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=32423

Admin, please could you attach this new thread onto the old one, for easier reference, thanks ?

These are the Baptisms you mention, plus a few more possibles? that may ?? be the same family, not sure yet without seeing the Census's.

1854 WILLETTS Lydia, John & Sarah, Blakeney Hill, Plasterer Blakeney
1858 WILLETTS Frederick, John & Sarah, Blakeney Hill, Mason Blakeney

The Census shows John as born abt 1811, I think this MAY be his Baptism from this site's PRs ?;

Even knowing the witnesses at their marriage, Charles & Hannah James, I cannot start to guess a Baptism for wife Sarah James' baptism, despite the Census giving her birth abt 1816, there are several possibles to choose from... but none with parents Charles or Hannah ??
Assuming that is she was baptised locally, or maybe they are siblings, perhaps ??

SO, nothing more yet, and really must go now. Hopefully more progress tomorrow, J

Hi Jeff Thanks for your help. I believe Sarah James parents were Henry JAMES and Mary TINGLE. I don't think John was John Smith Willetts he married Matilda COLE.

There is a marriage in Bishop's transcrpits for Monmouth on Ancestry in 1823 for John Willetts to Susannah Rudge

John Willetts
Gender:Male
Marriage Date:18 May 1823
Marriage Place: Bts, Monmouth, Monmouth, England
Spouse: Susanna Rudge
FHL Film Number:992324
Reference ID:cn 254

thought maybe Susannah could be Ann as it wasn't unusual for names Susannah/ Hannah/ Ann to be same person.

Thanks for the thread if John was baptised in 1810 he could be older therefore could have married Susannah. His death information says he was 74 years when he died though

Hi Simone

John would only have been about 12 years old in 1823?

Difficult one this isn't it?!

Regards
Chris

Yes this does have me stuck.

John WILLARS/WILLATS + Maria HAWKINS/HOWKINS

by MPGriffiths @, Thursday, February 26, 2015, 09:41 (3570 days ago) @ brenton

On the Forest of Dean records, there is a Marriage at Awre of John WILLARS of the Forest of Dean, marrying Maria HAWKINS - 22 October 1829 - no parents names given - but Memoranda: with Consent of Parents - as John would seem to be quite young on the census returns, this could be the marriage: Witnesses: Thomas HAWKINS and Charles FENNELL

Looking on Ancestry, John is John WILLATS and Maria is HOWKINS

Banns called - 4/11/18 October

From my past experience in my family tree - I do have children whose mother's name is either Mary or Ann - so this might be worth a bit more research.

Fod Records

Baptism at Awre - 22 December 1811

Mary Ann HAWKINS

parents William & Ann (mother's maiden name CHARLES)**

Memoranda: Blakeney Chapel, BT's show child's forename as Mary Ann and mother's forename as Anne

There is a son of John & Ann names: Charles c1834

also: a Maria HAWKINS born to a Berrow & Margaret at Awre 1810 - and a Thomas - 1808 - Barron & Margaret (nee BYRKIN)

Marriages at Awre

William HAWKINS married Ann CHARLES - 15 July 1804 - witnesses: Richard & Elizabeth NELMES
Barrow HAWKINS married Margarett BYRKIN - 4 August 1805

--

1841 Census, Newnham, Viney Hill

HAWKINS

Thomas - 30
Sarah - 20
Margaret - 65
Emma - 7
Ann - 5
Elizabeth - 9 months
Elizabeth ADAMS - 6
Edwin HAWKINS - 20

--

Fod Records - Marriage at Newland - 9 March 1840

Thomas HAWKINS (Widower, father Bettow HAWKINS, Quarryman)

married
Sarah ADAMS

--

Thomas HAWKINS appears to have first married Mary PARADISE at Awre 14 March 1829 - and one witness was William HAWKINS

Berrow HAWKINS - Sentenced to Death

by MPGriffiths @, Thursday, February 26, 2015, 10:04 (3570 days ago) @ MPGriffiths

If Berrow Hawkins is the father of Maria HAWKINS who married John WILL's in 1829 (although the Memoranda does say with consent of parents)

He was sentenced to death Lent 1819 for Sheep Stealing (Ancestry)

On the Gloucestershire Genealogical Database : Berrow is aged 54 and from Blakeney - 9 November 1818 - but Berrow and Margaret did have a Son - Thomas was was probably the Thomas HAWKINS a witness at the marriage in 1829.
