LITTLEDEAN PETTY SESSIONS, yesterday,

Eliza Malsom summoned Martin Perkins to show cause why he should not contribute towards the maintenance of her illegitimate child, of which she alleged he was the father. Mr Whatley on a previous occasion appeared for the defendant who desired to call “material witnesses” , the case being adjourned in consequence, but neither defendant nor his witnesses now appeared. Complainant said she lived at Nailbridge. Her child was born on September 9th 1885, and Perkins was the father of it. He promised to her father and mother to “send for her when he was in work”. She never had any letters from him. Elizabeth Malsom, mother of the plaintiff, said that at different times Perkins came to their house and told the girl’s father to “take care of her and not let anyone interrupt her”. He then “took his hook”. The defendant was ordered to pay 3s 6d a week until the child, a boy, reached the age of 13 years, and the costs.
