Folly Cottage Westbury (General)

by annie helsdown, Wednesday, May 13, 2015, 16:59 (3492 days ago)

Hello, I hope someone is able to help me.
I have been asked, by the new owners, to find out the history of Folly Cottage, Adsett Lane, in Westbury. I have looked through the Census and newspapers directories but cannot find mention of it. The house particulars state that it was built c1750 so i am presuming that it might have been known under another name. I tried to track it by finding Adsett Lane in the Census but that isn't there either.....so frustrating! I have no names to go by either.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Annie

I have assumed that, since someone is living there, the actual location isn't in doubt but, as a start, this map shows an Adsett Court and an Adsett Farm just east of Westbury. Perhaps the lane leading up to them is Adsett Lane? There is a cottage marked just south of the foot bridge but it isn’t identified. There are others north of the Court. It might be worthwhile trying to find the Court or the Farm in census and looking at adjacent entries.

As it has recently changed ownership the property will now be registered land and the deeds may be discarded. The present owners should ask the solicitors acting if the deeds are still available.

Details of the property can be found here: http://bit.ly/1czqmmH

If you make use of Google Street View it is possible to locate the property near the top of Adsett Lane and referring to the old map it would appear that it is located opposite Adsett Court.
