HI Slowhand,Many thanks for the information on Lucy and Charles.Do you have any info on Charles as to where and when he was born, and where he was in 1851 and 1861 also anything on the marriage of Charles and Lucy.
When they moved to Atherton in the late 1870s,Charles worked in the local coal mines as did his sons, the daughters worked in the coton mills.by 1901 Charles,Lucy and the younger members of the family had moved to the nearby town of Tyldesley cum Shakerley.Unfortunately one of Charles's grandsons was killed in a local mining accident aged 17.
Many Thanks Alan Shaw

Hi Slowhands,
re your message abt Charles Jenkins,do you think that the possible mis-transcribing could be Charles Halford 1861 census RG9 1756 Pg 3a living at No23 with his future wife Lucy Hale living at No51,census RG9 1756 Pg 9.My reason for suggesting this is that his son Sydney born abt 1869 in Blakeney Hill was married at Leigh Register Office and the name on the wedding certificate was Sydney Halford Jenkins?.

Hi Slowhands,re Charles Jenkins/Halford.I have found the following info,Wedding Certificate dated March 16 1864,St John's Church,St Johns Dean Forest,Charles Halford, age 19, Miner,Father George Halford,Sawyer.
Lucy Hale,age 18,Father Joseph Hale,Lime Burner.
Later in 1864 Frederick Halford born Blakeney Hill,In 1869 Sydney Halford born Blakeney Hill.On the 1871 census the family are in Trevethin Monmouthshire and are all called Jenkins.I can find no trace of a Charles Halford death or of a marriage of a Lucy Hale/Halford to a Charles Jenkins?.Would you have any idea as to why this might be?.
Also in 1861 the family appear to have split up with some living in,Bollow Rd, Cleeve Rodley and Bollow, and also Rookery,Chaxhil.Do you Know were these locations are.

Trying to solve mystery names Jenkins / Halford

by Janet Jenkins, Friday, October 23, 2009, 03:10 (5519 days ago) @ slowhands

I am trying to solve the mystery of the surnames "Jenkins" and/or "Halford" related to the same person.

My grandmother was Mary Ellen JENKINS, born 1896 in Ashton-In-Makerfield, Lancashire.

Her father was Frederick JENKINS, born 1864 in Blakeney, Gloucestershire.

His father was Charles JENKINS, born 1844 in Blakeney, Gloucestershire.

When I searched for the name of Charles father - it came up as "George HALFORD" born 1815. Why the different surname?

I tried to find out if maybe Charles mother, Harriet Halford had remarried to a man with the last name of Jenkins, but nothing showed up.

If anyone can help me solve this mystery, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hi Slowhands,

Thank you very much for all this information that you went to the trouble of putting together, and I really appreciate your time and efforts!

So, if I've got this right (it's the Jenkins family history that I'm after) - then Charles Jenkins parents are George & Harriett Jenkins married in 1826, and there is no Jenkins family connection to George Halford.

Is that right?

Thanks, Janet

I suspect its worst than that :-)

It looks like George HALFORD is George JENKINS - just as Charles swaps between HALFORD and JENKINS

quite why / where HALFORD comes from I'm not sure yet !

Christened JENKINS , base born perhaps his father was a Blakeney HALFORD ??

Hi Janet,
Are you still on this forum?

Did you ever get to the bottom of this mystery?
I'm researching the Halford family, specifically William Halford born c1848.
I have him with his wife from 1871 onwards.
In 1861 William is with siblings Charles and Charlot Halford.
In 1851 William (4) is with parents George Halford and Harriot Halford with children Jesse 14, Emma 10, George 8, Charles 6 and Thomas 1.

Closest result I can find in 1841 is George and Harriet JENKINS with various children including Jesse and Emma.

A strange one. I have no idea how to progress this.

John HALFORD JENKINS 1801 Blakeney

by daval57 @, Friday, February 01, 2013, 18:13 (4321 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Slowhands,
Thanks for all this.
Some of it I have as I have access to Ancestry.

I think it'll be easier if I print it all off and work through it chronologically AGAIN.

At one point, I wondered whether George Jenkins / Halford was perhaps born illegitimately as Jenkins, then his mother married later to a Halford and he and other family took on his mothers married name. No proof of this though. I was just trying to think outside the box for possible scenarios that would cause the change of name.

I appreciate your efforts meantime and will have a detailed look over the weekend.

Sydney HALFORD JENKINS 1869 - 1951 Blakeney -> Lancs

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Friday, February 01, 2013, 10:28 (4321 days ago) @ A. Shaw

Regards Alan Shaw
