Place name Wasberry, Gloucestershire (General)

Hello, this is my first post on this forum so apologies if I get it wrong. Can anyone confirm if Wasberry was a local name for Westbury on Severn area in 1871?

I find it as the recorded place of birth at an 1871 Census for a Jane Hill (nee Smith) living at Bedwelty.

At 1861 she was in the Workhouse at Westbury on Severn aged 19, a single mother with two children, and recorded as being born in East Dean.

Any help much appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum Stephen!

Personally I have never heard of Wasberry. However, if you combine a Welsh accent with a Forest accent Westbury may well sound like Wasberry!

Chris

I think Wasberry sounds like Westbury in a Forest accent without any Welsh. But as the census taker was probably Welsh and had probably never heard of it, that was his best guess at the spelling (he had no problem with mynyddyslwyn further down the page).
