MORGAN, Chepstow, Tidenham (General)

by Sian, Sunday, October 28, 2018, 15:22 (2224 days ago)

Looking for any information on the ancestors or children of James MORGAN, servant, and Sophia CLARK m 25 March 1811 St Mary, Chepstow. James may have died 1816 aged 30 giving a birth date c 1786.

Known children are:

Nathaniel James MORGAN - baptised 1814 Chepstow but also said he was born 1812 at Tidenham (1851 census). Married Elizabeth PETERS 1844 Newport, St Paul but had been married before (but to whom?), had at least 5 children: James 1838 Chepstow, Nathaniel 1840 Chepstow, George 1846 Risca Thomas 1847 Risca and William 1849 Newport.

James Huntingford MORGAN - baptised 1812 Chepstow

Thomas MORGAN - baptised 1816 Chepstow

There seem to have been a lot of Nathaniel Morgans in the area so I would be grateful for information about any of them for the purposes of elimination.

Hi Sian,
you say "Nathaniel James MORGAN .... Married Elizabeth PETERS 1844 Newport, St Paul but had been married before (but to whom?)" At first I read this to mean Elizabeth Peters had been married before, but now I think you mean Nathaniel, please can you confirm, thanks ?

Seems odd the whole family are so hard to find in the Census's ???, especially Nathaniel with his distinctive name (altho perhaps preferred James). ??
Except for 1851 as you know;

1851 Chepstow Road, Christ Church, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Nathaniel Morgan Head M 38 Market gardener. Tidenham, Gloucestershire
Eliza Morgan Wife F 30 Cam, Gloucestershire
James Morgan Son M 12 Errand boy. Chepstow, Monmouthshire
Nathaniel Morgan Son M 10 Gardener. Chepstow, Monmouthshire
George Morgan Son M 5 Risca, Monmouthshire
Thomas Morgan Son M 4 Risca, Monmouthshire
William Morgan Son M 1 Christchurch, Monmouthshire

1871 St Woollos, Monmouthshire, Wales
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Nathaniel Morgan Head M 62 Gardener & Salesman. Chepstow, Monmouthshire
Eliza Morgan Wife F 51 Gloucestershire
Richard Morgan Son M 18 Newport, Monmouthshire
Ann H Morgan Daughter F 17 Newport, Monmouthshire
John H Morgan Son M 14 Newport, Monmouthshire
Margaret Morgan Daughter F 6 Newport, Monmouthshire

Assuming Eliza was NOT previously married, could this be her ?, also from FamilySearch.
Presumably she's a servant at the Vicarage only a couple of miles from Cam, her place of birth ?.

1841 Vicarage, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
William Lewis Mills M 35-39 Scotland
Elizabeth Caroline Mills F 30-34 Gloucestershire
Eliza Chandler F 20-24 Gloucestershire
Eliza Peters F 20-24 Gloucestershire
Mary Bigland Mills F 1 Gloucestershire
William Lanseler* Mills F 0 Gloucestershire
Susanna Francis F 69-73

MORGAN, Chepstow, Tidenham

If it’s of interest I think this might be Nathaniel the younger,

GR 1861 Census, Devonport

In the household of Samuel SYMONS , 42, Barge Master,

Nathaniel MARYAN, Lodger, 21, Waterman, b. Wales, Monmouthshire

I’m sure the transcription should be MORGAN.

MORGAN, Chepstow, Tidenham

Ancestry has transcribed the name as Nathaniel MORGAN -

The G of Morgan - is written the same way as Samuel's occupation: i.e Barge
