Many thanks for all of the really helpful info you've posted. The reason you can't find Alfred Ernest Lane in the 1911 census is because he was by then working in West Africa - as you've no doubt she since seen. I have yet to go and look at his service history but I assume this was during his time in the Army. The collective help I've received means I've tracked down the newspaper articles you kindly gave me links to, and have also been able to find exactly where the Royal Oak was and currently is. Thank you so much for all your help and I'll no doubt be in touch soon.
