There are a number of references in the BNA (1900 to 1940) to a Dora Butler. Her husband Adolphus and possible relatives, Albert, Percy and Harold Butler are also mentioned. Most of the references are to court cases concerning various petty offences. It is clear that those involved are gypsies. Most of the action takes place around Stroud. Does this make sense in your context?

There is long paragraph

Gypies lived in Crump Meadow Wood, Cinderford. BUTLER is a well-known Forest Gypsey name and when Mrs Dora BUTLER died in 1953 her van was burnt at Crump Meadow - the first one to be burnt there for many years. A few yards away was an old frame tent, the home of her husband. they had married and had four sons and two daughters and had separated. And ever since he had paid her 2s 6d. a week, although the the last twelve years her van and his tent had only been a few yards apart. He used to take her a smoke or a bit of sugar. And when she died he decides to burn her caravan - 'And if your father died - would you like to see anyone else wearing his trousers? he said at the time. All Mrs Butler's possession were burnt; her van, furniture, clothes - even her wireless, although Mr Butlere had no wire. etc. etc.

Forest of Dean records

Dora BUTLER buried at Cinderford St John - 23 January 1953 - aged 75 years, residence: Crump Meadow.

You may find more information on Gypsy genealogy gypsygenealogy.com where there are Butlers mentioned and the Gypsy Family history Society https://rtfhs.org.uk/.
I did some research a few years ago for a friend some of whose ancestors appeared on Gypsy Genealogy including Butlers.

For those that may not know, burning a gypsy’s caravan when they die is a traditional custom, not an act of vandalism. I remember it happening in a traveller’s site in the Fens in the 1980s.

Hi. My mum (85) is the daughter of Albert Butler so would make you her cousin. My mum remembers your parents living with Fred’s mother at No. 10 Steam Hills. Fred was known as Flowsy to those that knew him. Fred’s mother kicked them out and they ended up in a tent in the forest. It seems Fred was partial to drink. Rosie had her children removed, some as soon as they were born. Mum remembered that she kept two boys. This is all the information that she told me. I hope this helps.
