Louisa Jellamy 1823 - (General)

by 12jquin, Friday, August 21, 2020, 06:47 (1558 days ago)

I think others have been down this trail before me but a long time ago. I contacted someone on Ancestry who had been in contact with someone in Australia about 20 years ago. She referred me to your website.

I am looking for Louisa Jellamy. The only record I can find of her is her marriage to John Pugh (Pew) in Newland in 1844 when they were living in Lydbrook.

The 1861 census does show the Pugh family living in Merthyr Tydfil. Her birthplace is recorded as Monmouthshire.

I eventually found them in the 1871 census, still in Merthyr Tydfil, but strangely the whole family had the surname of Griffiths.

The final reference I have to her is the marriage of her son, Richard Pugh, in New South Wales in 1886. The record shows his father's name as John Pugh and his mother's name as Louisa Hatton or Hutton.

I have been unable to trace her birth or her marriage to Hatton/Hutton.

Can anyone help me track Louisa down? Does anyone remember the previous search about 20 years ago?

Thank you.

Trying to find them on the 1851 census, (can see the 1861 census) - they obviously were around Merthyr Tydfil in 1847

Using the GRO INDEX

PUGH, Catherine - mother's maiden surname: JELLAMY

GRO Reference: 1847 M Quarter in Merthyr Tydfil Volume 26 Page 433

PUGH, William James 1849 J Quarter Merthyr Tydfil Volume 26 Pages 489 (mother's maiden name: JELLAMY)

The 1861 Census refers to an earlier child, Louisa, born in 1845,although I haven't been able to find her birth on GRO.

I have found another Pugh with the mother's maiden name of Jellamy - Mary Ann born in Abergavenny in 1843 (Volume 26, page 48).

I haven't managed to find them in 1851, although it took me a long time to find them in 1871, especially as their surname was different.

Well done.

But what is with the surname?

I can't believe that there are two families. The anchor for me for 1861 and 1871 is Betsy (Betsey), born in 1854, but that doesn't help with 1851.

The bizarre trail seems to lead from Pugh (in 1844 per the marriage in Newland) to Griffith (in 1851 in Glamorgan) to Pugh (in 1861 in Glamorgan) to Griffiths (in 1871 in Glamorgan).

Or am I wrong?

The woman I contacted on Ancestry also referred me to MonGenes. I'm just waiting on the email to confirm my registration.

I was beginning to think that there were two families. The younger children seemed to fit Griffiths with the mother's maiden name of Davies but the absence of Betsey (1854) and Eliza (1856) from the GRO records for Griffiths/Davies seems not to support this.

I also can't find the Griffiths family in the 1861 census.

Hi

I think it might have been me who directed you to this and to the MonGenes site. Having tidied up my files I found that I'd made notes and had found a family which I thought could be Louisa's - Richard Jellamy (sometimes Jeremy) and hsi wife Mary nee Roberts. I also found a note on the 1841 census with a Louiza Jerremy aged 15 (so could be anywhere between 15 and 19) living in Garn Vach Nantyglo Ironworks which I thought was a 99% chance of being her. Having said that I couldn't find a baptism for her.

Happy hunting!

Jane,

I do indeed have you to thank for putting me onto the Forest of Dean website and Mongenes.

In my last response to you, I had said that I was going to let this go - but I couldn't.

And, most of all, thank you for the Louiza Jerremy reference. It's the one and only time I've seen Louisa and Jellamy together. I do think you have solved the mystery of where was Louisa in the 1841 Census.

Regards,

Jeremy
