Question concerning the Skipp family (Urgent)

by Michael Stahl @, Spiekeroog and Oldenburg, Germany, Thursday, January 04, 2024, 13:22 (326 days ago)

Dear All,
Please excuse me for this maybe a bit „different“ topic and request.
While researching about the Skipp family I stumbled across this forum and found that this family has been the subject of discussions here before, so I hope to maybe get some answers to old questions.
I am the grandson of Charles V. Skipp who appears to have served in the British Services after WW2 and was stationed in Germany where he met my grandmother, Ingeborg Adler. Unfortunately, I have not much information about my grandfather as my grandmother didn‘t talk about this topic due to many reasons. The only information I have, is that my grandfather was born in (or around) 1890 and seems to have died in (or around) 1989. My father, Thomas Harold, was born in 1948. I will turn 50 this year, studied English and biology and work as a teacher in Germany. I am married and have two teenage daughters.
I have tried to find information on my grandfather now for years and hope that this topic will not be deleted by the admins, as I put a lot of hope in this request here as some members of the Skipp family seem to be around here.
Hoping to get some information and maybe find some family members, I am sending best wishes for 2024 to everybody.
Kind regards, Michael (Stahl)

Question concerning the Skipp family

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Thursday, January 04, 2024, 15:09 (326 days ago) @ Michael Stahl

Hi Michael, welcome to the forum.

Are you certain that you don't have any more information about the people you mention - every little helps ?

For example, yes the SKIPP family has been the subject of some threads on the forum in the past, especially within the Ledbury area just a little north of the Forest. I found this by using the forum search box, but at first look I cannot see any obvious mentions of the people you mention. Please, did you find a prior thread that seemed particularly relevant to your family ?.

Regarding your Grandfather Charles, as a starter the FreeBMD website is a quick and easy site to use and gives good coverage across all the UK, and is free to use.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

From this we find the following death record - the site contains BMD records for several "Charles Skipp"s, going back to 1837, but only a couple for "Charles V Skipp", namely;

Surname Given Name DoB District Volume Page Reg. No. Transcriber
Deaths 1988
SKIPP CHARLES VICTOR 22 JE 1897 BIRMINGHAM 32 0439 04.88

ie, Charles Victor Skipps death was recorded in the district of Birmingham in 1988, and his brithday was recorded as being 22nd June 1897.

This information matches the only other "Charles V Skipp" record off that website;

Surname Given Name District Volume Page Transcriber
Births Sep 1897
Skipp Charles Victor Royston 3a 569 shan57

(The "Sep 1897" refers to the quarter the death was registered, so sometime during July/August/September of 1897. It was the duty of the parents to visit their local office to advise of an event after it had happened, and not unusual for a birth to be recorded a while after the actual event, so in this case probably sometime in July as befits a birth in late June).
The Royston District is an area spanning three counties, see here.
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/royston.html

Excellent as the FreeBMD website it, it only searches for, and gives records for, against the exact information entered into it's search boxes, so it's not great at offering slight spelling variations. I can easily imagine the SKIPP surname to be accidentally spelt as "SKIP", so re-searching the site for Charles SKIP" gives just the one record in the whole of the UK.Given it's in Royston, I wonder if that record is an ancestor of your Charles Victor, possible even his parents of your Charles Victor ? - need to look him up in the census' to perhaps confirm this.

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1870 (>99%)
Geaves Mary Royston 3a 333
Gutteridge Catharine Royston 3a 333
SKIP Charles Royston 3a 333

Needs more researchto identify which lady is Charles' bride, and whether they are related to Charles Victor.

At this moment it's hard to see any obvious links to the Forest of Dean area in west Gloucestershire, but who knows ?.

Hoping 2024 brings you good luck and good news in your continued searches.
JJ

Later update - oops, it seems Slowhands has been looking at this query at the same time I was. Sorry about that, I'll leave you in his capable (and far from "Slow) hands.

Question concerning the Skipp family

by Michael Stahl @, Spiekeroog and Oldenburg, Germany, Thursday, January 04, 2024, 15:24 (326 days ago) @ Jefff

Dear Jefff,
Thank you so much for your long and detailed reply. This definitely helps a lot!
Unfortunately, this really IS the only information I have. Because of that, actually all Threads regarding the Skipp family are relevant or at least COULD be relevant for me.
Thanks a lot for the link to the freebmd website. I will check on that asap.
Also thanks A LOT for the info on the two Charles V. Skipp you found on the web. I hope that by combining the infos here (and maybe finding family members living in the Forest of Dean area), I can find out about my British family.
Concerning Forest of Dean, we plan to visit next summer, when we will bring our Land Rover „Home“ (it has been our home for more than a year when we traveled from northern Germany to Cape Town in 2015/2016) and travel Britain (also the „place“ where my wife and I fell in love and got engaged) … So, we will travel back to our roots in many ways and for sure will visit Forest of Dean (our daughters being absolute Harry Potter fans is just one reason).
Again, thanks for your help (and also for not deleting this thread ;-) ).
All the best, Michael

Hi

hopefully it is starting to fill some gaps for you ( I've been careful at records beyond 1939 as we are getting to living person records)

You're very welcome, glad the links have helped. Also glad to know you have a Landie, hopefully you will enjoy visiting the Forest in it, it will enjoy the small but sometimes steep hills and bends of the narrow Forest roads, even though you won't be allowed to take it on some of the more challenging off-road Forest tracks !

Another excellent and free to use website is the FamilySearch one. It gives coverage across the world as well as the UK, so I had a quick look for Charles to see if it gave anything to do with his time in Germany, perhaps. Sadly no it didnt, at least not yet, maybe you can get more luck if you have more time to try ?. But it did give the following marriage records for his children. The bare info should be available from the FreeBMD site, if you wish to build a family tree, but this gives a little more info again.

Name Allan Holbrook
Sex Male

Birth Year (Estimated) 1925
Father's Name Harry Holbrook
Father's Sex Male
Spouse's Name Olive Florence Emily Skipp

Spouse's Father's Sex Male
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 28 May 1955

From https://www.familysearch.org/en/

Using the FreeBMD site we can then search for possible births to these couples, eg :

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Sep 1959 (>99%)
SKIPP Hilary HANLEY Manchester 10e 358

Sadly we then find this record...

Surname Given Name Age District Volume Page Transcriber
Deaths Sep 1959
SKIPP Hilary 0 Manchester 10e 95 ianguardian

Also,

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Sep 1955 (>99%)
HOLBROOK Nigel SKIPP Barton 10b 326

Barton District is in Lancashire, more specifically Salford/Trafford districts of Greater Manchester.

Which leads to;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1978 (>99%)
Holbrook Nigel Roberts Trafford 39 1421
Roberts Gwyneth M Holbrook Trafford 39 1421

If you want to continue searching for any extended family within the UK, this technique might shed further results, but be advised we cannot help you any further on this forum. Also note the FreeBMD site's records do not extend up to current times, probably no more recent than the 1980s or 90s, although much-more recent records of this ilk are available on Ancestry etc, as are electoral registers etc which may give possible residential addresses etc.

-----

Finally Michael, if ok with you I'd like to send you a little more info that may interest you regarding your upcoming visit to the UK, and your Land Rover, so it's a little outside the remit of this forum so perhaps best kept just between us. Please can you contact me by direct email, off the forum, by clicking the envelope icon next to my user name at top of my posts. Please be assured this is purely general chit-chat and nothing to be worried about, and definitely no scam.

Hi again Michael,
thanks to Slowhands we know that Charles Victor SKIPP was a Retired 2nd Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade when the 1939 Register was taken on 29 September 1939 shortly after the start of WW2. You will also note the Register gives his precise birthdate of 22nd June 1897, so he'd have been about 41 years old in 1939.
The !939 Register wasn't a routine census like the 1921 etc before it. The information it gave was used to produce identity cards and, once rationing was introduced in January 1940, to issue ration books. Information in the Register was also used to administer conscription and the direction of labour, and to monitor and control the movement of the population caused by military mobilisation and mass evacuation. Serving members of the Armed Forces were not included, altho clearly many of the civilians who were listed would later serve. By the way, where entries in the Register are shown "closed", this is for reasons of privacy to those persons, as these records invariably refer to very young children at the time, so may still be alive nowadays.

Unfortunately I'm not currently subscribed to any of the big family history research websites, but this doesn't stop the Ancestry site giving a few hints. Again, it seems to prove there was only ever one "Charles V Skipp", the advantages of such an unusual nameset means the following results most probably do relate to your Grandfather Michael.

Firstly, it has an image if his Medal Index Card, as issued to everyone who served in the British Army and some other services during WW1, and was produced towards the end of the war to help administer the various service medals each person might claim. This particular card isn't as informative as some are, but it does state;

Name Charles V Skipp
Military Date 1914-1920
Military Place England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, United Kingdom
Regiment or Corps Machine Gun Corps
Regimental Number 65866

It also shows he'd risen to Sergeant, and was entitled to two of the basic three medals, namely the British War medal and the Victory Medal. The fact he wasn't entitled to the Star medal, and the lack of other details, shows Charles' service started after 1916. I can send you a pdf file of this card image if you're interested Michael, just email me via the envelope icon against my user name. More info about these cards here
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/british-arm...

The Machine Gun Corps was seen as something of an elite unit, a new unit needing men who were particularly good with their hands and the understanding of complicated mechanisms, and also mathematics and geometry too. This may be an indicator as to Charles' own interests and hobbies, and why in his later years he worked at an engineering company making presses in Coulsdon, south London. The MGC was also considered to be a suicide company, as they were so disliked and keenly targeted by their enemy !
https://www.machine-gun-corps-database.co.uk/intro_page.html

Sadly only about 2/3 of the individual Service Records for British Army WW1 soldiers still exist; as the Ancestry site doesn't mention them by now it appears that Charles' records are among those lost.

-------

The Ancestry website also suggests Charles had been awarded the Military Medal. The MM was awarded for acts of special devotion or bravery under fire, and was specifically for non commisioned officers and lower ranks. See https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/research-award-military-medal-mm/

All such awards were recorded (or "gazetted") by the London Gazette newspaper - using their free-to-use website we can search Charles by name and find images of the pages that show his award of the MM, published 25th July 1919 - which explains why it wasn't mentioned on his Medal Index card. Sadly the record doesn't tell us precisely what he did to gain the award, but this might possibly be mentioned in the War Diary for the MGC. Hopefully this link will work for you Michael and lead directly to the page.
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31475/supplement/9534

The second mention of Charles in the Gazette comes from 19th July 1940, so just after the Fall of France and the Dunkirk Evacuation. It tells us that he has been made a full 2nd Lieutenant, confirms he nas an MM, and also states he is now in the East Lancashire Regiment and his Army number is 136601.
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/34902/supplement/4496

Given the date of the award, and the fact the East Lancs Regiment was serving in France with the B.E.F. during the Battle of France until being part of the rearguard at Dunkirk, it seems possible that Charles had played an active part in this campaign.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Lancashire_Regiment

Does the fact Charles was with the East Lancashire regiment explain why his children were married in that same area, and his wife Florence died there (Trafford, Manchester) ?.

Sadly researching the detailed service records for individual WW2 soldiers is quite difficult, only proven descendants/family members can undertake this, and only by applying to the Brtish M.o.D.

I hope this is of interest Michael. I'm not a "supporter" of war in any form, but it has always interested me both historically and technically, and has been a large part of my engineering career.

Thank you so much @Jefff and @slowhands, you have been an immense help and put many lost pieces of my family puzzle together again! One „piece“ I would like to share here: years ago I stumbled across a certain „Victor Skipp“, artist, local historian (I tried to insert the Wikipedia link here, but that didn’t work), who I guessed he might be a relative, maybe my father‘s half brother, son of Charles Victor Skipp. I contacted one of the artists he seemed to have collected artwort from, Linda Karshan, and she kindly sent me some info on Victor, but sadly didn‘t have info on his family… Yesterday, with your help, I found out that I was right. Life goes funny ways … deeply thankful, guys!

For Victor Skipp, local historian in the Birmingham area (in case you‘re interested), see this link https://https://www.cam.ac.uk/news/primitive-art-modernism-philosophy-literature-an-ins... , this link https://https://vimeo.com/53794863 … and see https://https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Skipp

Question concerning the Skipp family

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Monday, January 08, 2024, 23:37 (322 days ago) @ Michael Stahl

Dear Michael,
many thanks for your kind words, but please be assured it's our pleasure that we were able to help you with your researches; and please don't worry that you were a little "late" replying, as you were not late at all. In fact its just so very nice that you replied at all, sad to say some people post queries and presumably see the forum's replies, yet they never bother to follow-up.
Just as I'm a tad late writing this haha.
Anyway, thanks for your email, I'll try to reply soon - and if I don't, PLEASE do chase me up. Unfortunately I have a lot of other stuff to deal with at the moment, my house and it's domestic appliances are all falling apart at once, rather like myself, the effects of old age no doubt, haha.
Many thanks again for your interesting post, and especially your enthusiastic replies !
Atb Jeff
