Hi all! I’ve spent months now trying to find out any information about my Grandad, I’m thinking now that maybe his birth wasn’t registered or that he changed his name, it’s all such a mystery, he died in 1969 leaving 5 children and all this mystery ???? I know he was a naughty boy before meeting my nan ???? but this is the information I have found below… I have been on ancestry, heritage and find my past but I get nowhere, so I thought I’d give here a shot. Thanks for reading.

Gloucester Citizen - dated 7th December 1946
Another car theft - Malcolm F Jones (21) whose mother lives at Speculation Cottage, Cannop, Coleford, but who, it is said, spent most of his time with caravan dwellers on the outskirts of Gloucester.

Hi,
I seem to be hitting my head against a brick wall with this ???? he was supposedly born Malcolm Melvin Francis born in Cinderford may 1926, there is no record of this. I don’t believe he married my nan as she was already married but ran away from her abusive husband with Malcolm. The children they had were Terry, Robin,Melvin, Brian,Hazel and Duncan. I thought maybe the name of where he lived at speculation cottage would help but it’s all just a mystery. Thankyou for helping. Tina

thanks I have found them in Worcestershire

as for a Malcolm Melvin born may 1926 thats a bit of a mystery (so far)

Gloucester Citizen 30th November 1946

Malcolm Francis Jones and Ernest Edward Wood appeared at Gloucester Court charged that on the 28th November they stole a car belonging to Lionel Harry Chamberlain. The addresses given by both men that neither had lived there for some time. They were remanded in custody.

he clearly uses a few names or variations although the FRANCIS surname seems to be preferred in later life ( and gave to the children).....

Hi, when Malcolm Francis was in trouble with stealing cars, he was with an Ernest William wood age 19 born then in 1928. I’ve looked into Ernest’s address and idly he had the same address as a Clarke Francis she was a house keeper (born 1886) the address is 84 India road, Gloucestershire, I wander if this is the Francis?

So the Church Army hostel in those days was on the London Road nr its junction with Great Western Road, probably conclude that he was homeless and probably penniless at this stage of his life.

This is circa 1951/52 ?

Over the years that I have been doing this (!), the traveller locations that I have encountered in census data etc, around Gloucester have been Sandhurst lane/Walham, and the Westgate Bridge to Over area. An area prone to winter flooding

Gloucester's Mop Fair also known as Barton Fair was held on the Oxlease /Over Causeway in the early 1900's
