JORDAN family. Cinderford and Lydbrook (General)
by admin , Forest of Dean, Wednesday, February 23, 2005, 11:25 (7219 days ago)
George Jordan born Lydbrook c1812 and his wife Sarah also born Lydbrook c.1815. Would like to find their marriage. Children on census appear to have been born from 1842 on. Only marriage found doesnot have Sarah as wife. Can anyone help with this family please? 1871 Census living Stockwell Green, George died the same year and is buried at St John's churchyard, Cinderford.
Thank you for the help with my original query. It has been wonderful to get such a response.
Second brainteaser!! I believe that George's parents were a Thomas and Elizabeth Jordan, married 1810 St Briavels, and I have a Will of Thomas (Blacksmith)died Aug. 1855.of Camomile Green, West Dean.He names his wife Elizabeth and Sons. George, Edward, John(who got the Smith shop)William and Joseph. 1851 Census shows them with Joseph at home, but how can I confirm the link that my George is their first son? My George married 1836 to Sarah Johnson in Ruardean. Pre-registration!!!
Is there anyone who could look at the Parish Registration entry to see if parents are named for me please? Or can anyone come up with another method of proof?

In 1851 ? East dean
JORDAN George 36 Labourer Ruardean
Sarah 30 Lydbrook
Mary Ann 19 Scholar Ruardean
Sarah 10 Scholar Lydbrook
George 8 East Dean
William 4 East Dean
Esther 2 East Dean
Francis 2 East Dean
The ages seem all over the place at first glance in these transcriptions
So perhaps they married prior to 1841 - I guess Mary Ann is really 12 or so
There is a George Jodan of similar age from Lydney married to a Mary.

On the 1871 Census there is a William JORDON age 24 (b. abt 1847).
I have in my family tree a William JORDON who married Jane Hannah WATKINS (b.1846 High Beach) They had a son Albert John JORDON (b. 1 July 1876 Ruardean)
Could this be this be the same William? I will have to go and dig deep into my stack of papers and see if I can make a connection here.

Sarah Anne Banks (nee Jordan)
Stockwell Inn, Stockwell Green
The Stockwell Inn was a small beerhouse. It was referred for closure by the compensation authority (date not recorded) who described it as a one roomed (12 feet by 9 feet) beerhouse located down a bad road opposite the cricket ground. The Stockwell Inn was trading 120 barrels of beer per year at the time of referal. It had an annual rateable value of £18.0s.0d in 1891 and 1903.

Thankyou for the information I spent years trying to get any information on the Inn and the area untill these past few years nothing ever came of it
I have a relation in pontypridd who has been on a field trip for me to Stockwell Green and low and behold the Inn is still standing !although now a private home. I sent a photo to the Glostershire Pubs sight and a gent soon informed me that he used the photo in his book I was delighted as the picture
is so ornate with the biggest pig I have ever seen in the garden this quaint little place at last has some history to it.
As for the building it is believed to be over 250 years plus the lady who now owns it is forwarding me some information . Along with photos of the Jordan head stones that ar in St Johns church yard .

Hi Ann
I saw the picture for the Stockwell Inn, in the Forest Review, which is a local newspaper, which was quite a suprise for me. The Stockwell Inn as it was called belonged to my Grandparents from the 1940's until my Grandmother sold it after my Grandfathers death in 1975. When they lived there it was called 'Ye olde Court house' or 6 Stockwell Green. I remember that it was a large house with a massive garden and a stables and pigscote.
I can see if there are any photos of the house and send you some copies if you like.
With regards,
Sandra
